LAURINBURG, N.C.—Junior third baseman Danyell Marquez (Riverside, Calif.) had four hits and four RBI but visiting Indiana University of Pennsylvania opened up its season with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of host St. Andrews Presbyterian College, 10-4 & 10-1, on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at the Knights Softball Field.

SAPC junior Danyell Marquez (pictured) is batting .349 on the season and has a team-highs of 14 RBI and three home runs after Tuesday's doubleheader against Indiana (Pa.).

The Lady Knights fall to 5-9 on the season and will host non-conference Davis & Elkins College on Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. Marquez hit her team-leading third home run of the season in the opener to highlight her four-hit performance.

The Crimson Hawks (2-0) ripped 25 hits in the twin bill and scored 10 runs in each game. Junior catcher Sam Goettman (Mars, Pa.) led all players with five hits on the day while adding three RBI and three runs scored. The sophomore duo of Jamie Palmerio (Norristown, Pa.) and Kelsey Ferguson (Indiana, Pa.) both drove in four runs for the visitors.

GAME ONE: IUP 10, SAPC 4
Box Score; Play-By-Play

Marquez crushed a towering two-run homer in the third inning to tie the game at 4-4 but Indiana scored six runs in the final three innings to take the first game by a final score of 10-4.

Both teams scored two runs in the first before IUP regained a two-run lead on an RBI-triple by senior Alex Daughenbaugh (York, Pa.) in the second and an RBI-double by Palmerio in the third. Marquez then knotted the score with her two-run blast over the right-center fence.

Sophmore starter Erin Holloway (Harleysville, Pa.) helped her own cause driving in the go-ahead run in the fifth with an RBI fielder’s choice. Holloway (1-0) allowed four runs (two earned) and eight hits in the complete-game victory. Holloway finished with seven strikeouts.

The Crimson Hawks scored three insurance runs in the sixth and two unearned runs in the seventh to pull away to the six-run victory. IUP collected 12 hits in the opener including two base knocks by Daughenbaugh, Goettman, Palmerio, and freshman Marisaa Leslie (Claysburg, Pa.). Sophomore Britany Allman (Hatfield, Pa.) crossed home plate three times after going 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.

Marquez, freshman Kaitlin Harris (Acworth, Ga.), and junior Sarah Applegarth (Gainesville, Ga.) accounted for six of the Knights eight total hits with two apiece. Marquez tallied three RBI in the first game.

GAME TWO: IUP 10, SAPC 1
Box Score; Play-By-Play

IUP jumped out to a five-run lead in the top of the first and never looked back, completing the non-conference sweep of SAPC with a 10-1 in the nightcap.

Ferguson and Palmerio each had a two-run double to highlighted the Crimson Hawks 13-hit offensive outburst as they both plated three runs for IUP. Goettman was 3-for-4 with two RBI while Allman and freshman Megan McCormick (Evans City, Pa.) had the Hawks other RBI’s.

Indiana starter Jenny Shaffer (Brookville, Pa.) started off her senior season with an impressive complete-game victory, scattering five hits over seven innings.

Marquez was 2-for-3 in the second game including an RBI-single in the fourth that ended the shutout bid. Marquez currently has a team-high, four-game hit streak.

Applegarth, who was named the Conference Carolinas Softball Pitcher of the Week earlier in the day, had a rough afternoon taking the loss in both games. Applegarth (4-4) was tagged for the final six runs (four earned) in the opener and seven runs (six earned) in the finale. Freshman Ashley Disque (Prince Frederick, Md.) tossed a team-high 8.0 innings on Tuesday allowing a total of seven runs (four earned) over that span.
