LAURINBURG, N.C.—Eight different Lady Knights ripped a hit as St. Andrews Presbyterian College swept Fayetteville State University on Sunday afternoon. After posting an 8-0 shutout (six innings) in the opener, SAPC held off a late rally by the Broncos to complete the sweep with a 3-2 win the nightcap.

Senior catcher Megan Riggs (Hubert, N.C.) blasted a two-run home run in the first game and junior third baseman Danyell Marquez (Riverside, Calif.) smashed her own two-run homer in the second game to highlight the Lady Knights offense.

Junior Danyell Marquez (pictured) had a big weekend from the plate that featured grand slam on Saturday and a solo homer on Sunday.

St. Andrews won 3-of-4 games this weekend to even its record to 3-3 on the season. The Knights – who only hit five home runs in 2008 – crushed four homers this weekend to increase their season total to five on the early season. The Broncos dip to 2-8.

Junior Kailee Munden (LaVerne, Calif.) had three hits for the Knights including a pair of doubles. Munden had a team-high four RBI. Sophomore speedster Jasmine Dobbin (Pikeville, N.C.) had a triple to highlight her three hits. Dobbin swiped three bases to remain a perfect 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts this season. Junior Sarah Applegarth (Gainesville, Ga.) starts the year with a six-game hit streak after going 3-for-5 on the day.

SAPC next travels to Murfreesboro, N.C. for a non-conference double dip at Chowan University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

GAME ONE: St. Andrews 8, Fayetteville State 0 (6 innings)
Box Score; Play-By-Play

Applegarth tossed her first complete-game shutout of the season and St. Andrews scored eight runs on nine hits en route to the eight-run victory in the first game. Applegarth improved to 2-1 on the season after picking up her second win in as many days. She took a no-hitter into the fourth inning but a double by freshman Alicia Frank ended the bid after 4 1/3. Applegarth fanned five Broncos and only allowed two hits and one walk. She helped her own cause at the plate going 2-for-2 with a walk.

The Knights scored a pair of unearned runs in the second and one run in the third to take an early 3-0 lead. SAPC doubled up its lead with three more runs in the sixth featured by Riggs two-run bomb over the left-center field fence, her first home run in a Royal Blue & White uniform.

Munden ended the game with a deep double over the right fielder that plated two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Munden, Marquez, and freshman Lex Cowger (Indian Head, Md.) were all credited with an RBI in the opener with sacrifice flies.

GAME TWO: St. Andrews 3, Fayetteville State 2
Box Score; Play-By-Play

Freshman starter Ashley Disque (Prince Frederick, Md.) survived a late scare to earn her first collegiate victory as St. Andrews posted a 3-2 victory in the finale.

Disque (1-2) was one out away from her first career shutout but senior Dominique Mills drove in the Broncos only runs of the afternoon with a two-run double with two outs in the top of the seventh. However, Disque preserved the win with a groundout to earn the complete-game victory. She allowed four hits and four walks while striking out a season-high six batters.

Marquez put the Knights on the board with a solo home run in the second. Marquez slugged her second long ball of the year to left-center. Dobbin plated junior Brianna Shurtleff (Colton, Calif.) with a single in the third and scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a double by Munden in the sixth.

Dobbin supplied two of the Knights six hits while stealing second base twice. Mills had a team-high two base knocks for Fayetteville State while freshmen Kristin Britt took the loss allowing three runs (two earned) over six innings.
