Knights softball drops twin bill at Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK, N.C.—Freshman Jasmine Dobbin (Pikeville, N.C.) had a team-high four hits for visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College but host Lees-McRae College won the Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader by scores of 4-3 (9) and 10-2 on Tuesday afternoon at the Bobcats Softball Diamond.

The Bobcats evened its record at 18-18 overall while improving to 8-12 in Conference Carolinas play. The Lady Knights maintain 9-32 overall and 3-15 league ledgers.

SAPC visits Conference Carolinas rival Queens University of Charlotte on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.

Dobbin had two hits in each game to pace the Knights including a double, a stolen base, and one RBI. Senior Samantha Stewart (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) collected three hits including a pair of doubles while driving in a team-high two runs. Senior Ashley Shurtleff (Colton, Calif.) was the only other Knight with multiple hits with two singles.

In the opener, St. Andrews trailed 1-0 heading into the seventh inning but was able to score the equalizer to force extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, SAPC took a 3-1 lead but LMC scored two runs in the bottom half tie the game up again. The Bobcats won the game in the ninth scoring the walk-off run.

Dobbin, Stewart, and sophomore Brianna Shurtleff (Colton, Calif.) drove in the Knights three runs in the first game.

In the nightcap, Lees-McRae exploded for 10 runs in the first two innings en route to the 10-2 eight-run rule victory in five innings.

St. Andrews was able to score one run in both the fourth and fifth but it was not enough. Stewart and sophomore Morgan Farroll (Newton Grove, N.C.) supplied the Knights two runs with one RBI apiece.
