LAURINBURG, N.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College softball team connected for 20 hits including seven doubles in a 9-0 and 9-2 doubleheader sweep of local rival Fayetteville State University during Sunday afternoon’s “Senior Day”.
Knights’ catcher/outfielder Devane Rushing was honored in-between games as the only senior on the St. Andrews roster. The Monroe, N.C., native had three hits, a double, three RBI, and two runs scored to add to her celebration as the Knights improved to 9-25 on the season.
SAPC jumped out early and often in the first-game shutout. The Knights scored three runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Rushing and a double by freshman Kailee Munden (LaVerne, Calif.) that plated the senior.
Sophomore Brittni York (Indian Trail, N.C.), who was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk in the opener, provided the Knights fourth run with a double in the second. Freshman Brianna Shurtleff (Colton, Calif.) and Munden each had an RBI in a three-run fourth inning to extend the St. Andrews advantage to 7-0. Shurtleff ended the game in the fifth with a two-run double.
Junior Samantha Stewart (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) earned her team-high fourth victory of the season after allowing just two hits in the first three innings while striking out three. Freshman Lauren James (Bahama, N.C.) completed the shutout with two scoreless innings of relief of Stewart.
Fayetteville State (0-18 overall) took an early 1-0 lead in the finale with a run in the top of the first. St. Andrews quickly responded with four runs in the home half of the inning to take the lead for good. The Broncos added another run in the second but the Knights added three more in the bottom half to extend the lead to 7-2. A two-run single by junior Mika Tanji (Honolulu, Hawaii) in the sixth concluded the scoring as St. Andrews pulled away to the seven-run victory and the sweep.
York earned her third win of the season with four scoreless innings of relief. York fanned six batters while James had two strikeouts from the starters roll.
Four Knights finished with three hits apiece including Munden, York, Rushing, and Shurtleff. The quartet also accounted for 10 of SAPC’s 15 runs batted in. York and Shurteff also had two stolen bases apiece.
