HARTSVILLE, S.C.—St. Andrews Presbyterian College junior Samantha Stewart and freshman Danyell Marquez each drilled two home runs in a 8-7 extra-inning loss in game one while senior Devane Rushing hit a three-run homer in a 3-2 victory in the finale as the Knights split a CVAC softball doubleheader at Coker College on Sunday afternoon.
Coker is now 24-8 overall and 7-3 in the CVAC, while St. Andrews is 7-23 overall, and 3-9 in the CVAC.
In game one, it took extra innings to decide a winner, with St. Andrews storming back into the contest in the seventh inning when Stewart blasted a three-run home run, her second of the day, to tie the game at five.
In the eighth it was more homers for the Knights as Danyell Marquez belted her second of the game, a two-run rocket, giving the Knights a two run lead.
But, the preseason CVAC favorites would not be held down, as Miranda Klees, Ashton Williamson and Allie Bragg all had RBIs and the Cobras took home the 8-7 victory.
Somer Bigham (17-6) earned the win throwing a complete game allowing seven runs on eight hits with seven strike outs.
Stewart took the loss allowing eight runs on nine hits with four strike outs.
Leading the Cobras at the plate were Jessica Blackwell, Anna Lucas and Katie McCauley. Blackwell was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Lucas was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI and McCauley was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Stewart and Marquez had the big bats for St. Andrews. Each had three hits, with two home runs, while Stewart had four RBIs and Marquez had three. Marquez has a team-high four home runs on the season for the Knights.
Game two saw Coker jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the first, but that would be all the runs the Cobras would manage, as St. Andrews again turned it on at the end of the game scoring three runs in the sixth to take home the victory.
Shelly Catlett (7-2) took the loss, going all seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits with six strike outs.
Lauren James earned her second win of the season allowing just two runs on 11 hits.
Kimberly Atkinson was 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Coker, while Williamson and Lucas were each 2-for-4.
Devane Rushing was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored for the Knights, while Marquez, Mika Tanji and Brianna Shurtleff were each 1-for-3.
St. Andrews will host CVAC foe Belmont Abbey College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
