MOC softball posts two shutouts over St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C.—The Mount Olive College softball team connected for 24 hits to remain perfect in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference during a 12-0 and 9-0 doubleheader sweep of host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Thursday afternoon.

Senior Tiffanie Pittman (Riverside, Calif.) was a perfect 6-for-6 from the plate with a game-high six RBI to lead the Trojans (20-7 Overall; 4-0 CVAC) to the pair of victories. The Knights fell to 6-22 on the year and 2-8 in the league.

Sophomore Mika Tanji (Honolulu, Hawaii) and senior Devane Rushing (Monroe, N.C.) tallied two hits apiece for St. Andrews in the twin billing. Tanji had the only extra-base hit for the Knights ripping a double in the second game.

Sophomore starter Jenny Jackson (Fremont, N.C.) earned the win in the first game for Mount Olive after pitching three effective innings en route to the 12-0 (five innings) win. Jackson also had a big day offensively connecting for four hits and five RBI including a grand slam in the second game.

Pittman led the 12-hit Trojan attack in the first game driving in four runs on three hits including two doubles. Jackson also had three hits and freshman Courtney Wallace (Palm Harbor, Fla.) had two RBI.

Jackson (5-3) scattered just three hits in the first three innings while striking out four to earn the ‘W’ from the mound. Sophomore reliever Christine Ermer (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) followed with two perfect innings to complete the shutout.

Pittman added three more hits (two doubles) and two RBI to pace the Trojans 12-hit barrage in the nightcap. Jackson highlighted Mount Olive’s scoring with a bases-loaded home run in the fourth inning. Jackson’s grand slam to left field was her sixth blast of the season. Sophomore Kensie Cobb (Greenville, N.C.) had two hits in the finale including a triple.

Junior starter Ashley Raynor (Raleigh, N.C.) earned the complete-game shutout allowing just six hits and two walks over five innings. Raynor (4-2) also fanned one.

SAPC had several opportunities to score but left eight runners on base including a one-out, bases-loaded chance in the fourth.

Knights junior Samantha Stewart (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) took the loss in both contests.

St. Andrews will visit CVAC rival Coker College (Hartsville, S.C.) on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Mount Olive will host CVAC foe Anderson University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
