LAURINBURG, N.C.—Junior starter Samantha Stewart (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) threw a 10-strikeout shutout in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, as host St. Andrews Presbyterian College swept CVAC foe Lees-McRae College by 2-0 and 10-4 scores on Saturday.
The Lady Knights, who hold a 2-10 overall record and a 2-2 slate in the CVAC, picked up their first two wins of the year while the Lady Bobcats fell to 3-11 overall and 0-2 in the CVAC.
Stewart (1-3) earned her first victory of the season by pitching a 7.0 inning gem that included fanning 10 Lees-McRae batters. Stewart scattered just three hits and one walk in the complete-game shutout.
Two runs were all Stewart needed as the Knights posted their first shutout of the season. Freshman Brianna Shurtleff (Colton, Calif.) started a two-out, first inning rally with a walk and a stolen base. Senior Devane Rushing (Monroe, N.C.) drove in Shurtleff with a single to right.
Freshman Nicole Easter (Lumberton, N.C.) drove in an insurance run in the second with a double to left that plated classmate Kailee Munden (LaVerne, Calif.), who led off with a single.
St. Andrews jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the nightcap with six runs in the second inning. Two errors by the Bobcats helped keep the inning alive as the Knights kept crossing home plate.
Lees-McRae pulled to within four, 6-2, with a two-run third but SAPC answered with four more runs in the bottom half of the inning. B. Shurtleff capped the rally with a two-run double to center.
The Bobcats scored a lone run in the fourth and freshman Paula Fryar (Clinton, N.C.) added a home run in the seventh but St. Andrews still coasted to the six-run victory.
Sophomore Brittni York (Indian Trail, N.C.) earned the win in relief of freshman starter Lauren James (Bahama, N.C.). York (1-3) had three strikeouts over the final 3 2/3 innings while James had one K.
St. Andrews will host CVAC foe Queens University of Charlotte on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
