NEWBERRY, SC—Freshman Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo, NY) crushed a late two-run home run in Sunday’s nightcap to earn a 2-1 non-conference victory and a split with Newberry. The Newberry softball team garnered a 6-2 win in the first game of the Lady Indians ‘Senior Day’.
Newberry moves to 17-28-1 overall while St. Andrews maintains a 7-23 ledger on the season.
The Lady Indians got off to a quick start in game one as they scored two runs in both the second and third innings. Kat Hammond (Irmo, SC) forced an error to start the second and later scored off a Shealy double down the left field line. Shealy scored herself after Jenny Raines (Blythewood, SC) sent a single up the middle. In the third, Jessica Jackson (Batesburg, SC) scored off an errant throw and Ashley Marine (Peachtree City, GA) made it home after Christina Kirby's (Delmar, DE) double.
Shealy scored again in the fourth after a Courtney Lindler (Irmo, SC) RBI single, but the Knights were able to respond in the sixth. A senior Amme Mason (Georgetown, CA) double plated sophomore Mika Tanji (Honolulu, HI), which was followed by a one-run double from junior Devane Rushing (Monroe, NC). The Lady Indians were able to tack on one more run in their half of the sixth after Lindler drove in Hammond with a single.
Kirby picked up the win, improving her record to 10-12. She scattered just five hits on the game and struck out three. Dobmeier was charged with the loss and dropped to 3-14 on the year. Shealy went 2-for-2 from the plate and scored two runs while Lindler went 2-for-2 with two RBI.
In game two, Newberry scored what appeared to be the game's only run in the first inning, which was until Dobmeier had her say late in the game. Jackson started the game with a walk and moved to second on Marine's sac bunt. Jackson advanced to third on a wild pitch and later ended up scoring on a wild pitch to give the Lady Indians an early lead.
The game went scoreless for the next five innings as neither team could push across a run. Newberry stranded seven runners in that span, while St. Andrews had just one hit. The Lady Indians looked to get away with a 1-0 victory, but St. Andrews came up with a timely hit in the seventh for the come-from-behind win. Freshman Brittni York (Indian Trail, NC) singled to start the Knight rally, but Monette struck out Mason leaving the Knights with two outs. Dobmeier stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run home run just inside the left field foul pole, giving St. Andrews the lead. Newberry was unable to answer in their half of the seventh.
Newberry starter Stephanie Monette (Conway, SC) pitched another solid game as she gave up just three hits and struck out a season-high five batters in a complete game performance. York (1-3) earned her first win of the season, while Monette (1-6) was charged with the loss.
St. Andrews will host CVAC rival Pfeiffer University in a doubleheader on April 12 beginning at 2 p.m.
