April 04, 2006

Game 1; Game 2

BELMONT, NC—Belmont Abbey defeated St. Andrews Presbyterian College 4-0 and 9-5 Tuesday afternoon in a CVAC softball doubleheader. The Crusaders improved to 16-27 overall and 8-4 in the CVAC, while St. Andrews dropped to 5-21, 2-10 in the conference.

Belmont Abbey scored two runs in the second and two runs in the third to give starter Carrie Markham all the support she would need in the opener. Markham limited the Knights to five hits and cruised after getting out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning. Katie Hobbs went 2-3 with one RBI to lead BAC while Abby Threat went 1-3 with a run scored and a RBI.

The Crusaders jumped out fast in game two and scored in each of the first four innings to lead 9-0 heading into the fifth. The Knights scored two unearned runs in the inning to stave off an early ending and added three more in the seventh for a 9-5 final score.

The Abbey racked up 16 hits including five doubles. Erica Rutledge pitched 3.2 innings for BAC and allowed only three hits and no runs to get the win. Threatt went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored and helped her cause going 2-for-2 with three RBI. Hobbs had another three hits and scored a run while Dani Beres smacked two hits and scored twice.

Senior Bet Smith ( Lexington, SC), senior Amme Mason (Georgetown, CA) and freshman Brittni York (Indian Trail, NC) all collected three hits apiece for SAPC. Junior Devane Rushing (Monroe, NC) drove in a team-high two runs while sophomore Ashley Shurtleff (Colton, CA) scored twice.

St. Andrews hosts CVAC rival Coker College on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
