Lady Saints fastpitch sweeps CVAC double dip against SAPC

LAURINBURG, NC—Limestone College maintained its hold of second place in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC) softball standings with a 6-0 and 8-3 sweep of host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Sunday.

The Lady Saints, winners of seven of their last eight, improved to 19-24 overall and 9-3 in the CVAC. The Knights, who had their four-game win streak snapped, fell to 5-19 and 2-8.

St. Andrews continues conference play with a CVAC doubleheader at Belmont Abbey on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.

Game 1 (7 innings)

Limestone struck first in the third on a two-run single by freshman Lauren Robertson (Cincinnati, OH) after freshman Candice Evans (Lexington, SC) singled and sophomore Brittany Owen (Pasadena, MD) doubled.

Sophomore Kristen Spicer (Mechanicsville, VA) extended the Lady Saints lead to 3-0 in the fifth with a single up the middle that plated freshman Christina Woolgar (Orangeville, CA).

Limestone doubled up its score with three more runs in the sixth. After sophomore Jessica Brown (Inman, SC) and senior Amy Yates (Goose Creek, SC) singled, sophomore Keisha Thompson (Union, SC) doubled in freshman pitch runner Maggie Bolton (Blacksburg, SC). A Woolgar pop fly scored an alert Yates and a single by Evans plated Thompson for the final run.

Freshman pitcher Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo, NY), who went 1-for-2 from the plate with a walk, allowed six runs on 12 hits over 7.0 innings while striking out two. Sophomore Mika Tanji (Honolulu, HI) led the Knights with two hits while sophomore Ashley Shurtleff (Colton, CA) ripped the only extra-base hit for SAPC with a double in the seventh.

Thompson, Evans, and Brown all had two hits apiece for the Lady Saints. Senior starter Jennifer Casement (Peterborough, Ontario, Canada) picked up the complete-game shutout scattering seven hits while striking out five.

Game 2 (7 innings)

The two teams traded single runs in the first inning of the nightcap. A Woolgar sacrifice fly to left scored Yates for Limestone’s first run while a senior Amme Mason (Georgetown, CA) double plated sophomore Erin Haugen (Fort Mill, SC) for the tying run.

SAPC grabbed its first lead of the day with two runs in the bottom of the third. Tanji led off with a walk and Haugen singled with a well placed bunt. Mason scored both base runners with a single up the middle.

The Lady Saints catapulted back into a 4-3 lead with three runs in the fourth. Brown, Yates and Thompson slapped three consecutive run producing doubles to take the slim advantage. Limestone added an unearned run in the sixth before scoring three more in the seventh to pull away to the 8-3 final margin.

Spicer finished 2-for-4 including a two-run double in the seventh while Thompson had three hits and two RBI. Evans, who pitched 2/3 of an inning in the third, garnered the win. Junior Elizabeth Hawkins (Belton, SC) picked up the rare save by retaking the mound and pitching effective relief in her second stint. Hawkins fanned four over 6 1/3 innings of work.

Mason finished with two hits and all three RBI. Tanji had a single after drawing two walks in the leadoff position. Freshman Brittni York (Indian Trail, NC) took the loss after allowing eight runs on 13 hits in 6.0 innings.
