Game 1; Game 2
WILSON, NC—All 10 Knights batters ripped hits on Tuesday as the St. Andrews Presbyterian College softball team went on a 22 hit assault of Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference rival Barton College to claim an 10-2 and 5-2 doubleheader sweep at Jeffries Field.
The Knights improved to 3-17 overall and 2-6 in the CVAC while the Lady Bulldogs fell to 7-18 and 1-9.
SAPC will try for four straight when they visit non-conference Salem College (Winston-Salem, NC) on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. Barton will travel to Murfeesboro, NC, for a non-conference twinbill against Chowan on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
Game 1 (5 innings)
St. Andrews started the day with 14 hits in game one including base knocks by all nine starters. Junior Devane Rushing (Monroe, NC) got the scoring going with a two-run double to center in the first. A freshman Dani Ghramm (Lake City, ID) leadoff double in the second and an RBI-single by freshman Elizabeth Windham (Wartrace, TN) made it 3-0.
Emily Sale, who led off with a double and later scored during a double play, cut the Barton deficit to two in the bottom half of the second.
The Knights exploded for seven runs in the fifth to take a commanding 10-1 advantage. A two-run single by freshman Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo, NY) started the run. A senior Bet Smith (Lexington, SC) double to center and singles by Ghramm, Windham, sophomore Mika Tanji (Honolulu, HI) and senior Amme Mason (Georgetown, CA) drove in the last five runs.
The Lady Bulldogs loaded the bases in the fifth with one out but only produced one run on a Jenna Gregory single and fell victim to the run-rule loss.
Dobmeier scattered seven hits in the complete-game victory on the mound.
Game 2 (8 innings)
The Knights looked poised to take the nightcap after scoring a one-run in both the first and fourth. Tanji and sophomore Erin Haugen (Fort Mill, SC) started the game with back-to-back singles and Dobmeier drove in Tanji with a single to left. Smith connected on her first home run of the season, a solo blast to center, with two outs in the fourth.
However, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh Sale crushed a two-run homer to tie the game at 2-2 and send play into extra innings.
Tanji was placed on second to start the Knights eighth with the international tiebreaker rule. After being bunted over by Haugen, Tanji crossed home for the go-ahead run on an infield single by Mason. Rushing added two insurance runs by going deep for the third time this year.
Mason picked up the win on the mound in relief of freshman Brittni York (Indian Trail, NC). Mason and York combined for seven strikeouts over 8.0 innings.
On the day, Dobmeier led the Knights with four hits while Rushing drove in four. Tanji crossed home plate three times while Tanji and Mason each had a trio of hits.
