Game 1; Game 2
LAURINBURG, NC—Junior Devane Rushing (Monroe, NC) went 5-for-8 on Tuesday but the Knights left 18 runners on base as visiting Chowan College defeated St. Andrews 6-3 and 8-3 in non-conference softball action.
The Lady Braves improved to 15-8 overall while the Knights, who had 19 hits but missed out on several scoring opportunities, fell to 1-15.
St. Andrews hosts Erskine College in a Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference doubleheader on Monday, March 20 at 2:00 p.m.
Game 1
SAPC scored the first run of the day with a single by Rushing that scored sophomore Erin Haugen (Fort Mill, SC) in the bottom of the third.
Chowan evened everything at one apiece with a bases-loaded RBI groundout by Nichole Young. The Lady Braves grabbed their first lead of the day with three unearned runs in the fifth.
Run producing singles by freshman Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo, NY) in the fifth and sophomore Mika Tanji (Honolulu, HI) in the sixth cut the deficit to 4-3 heading into the final inning.
Chowan added two more unearned insurance runs in the seventh and Jessica Stauty saved the game with an effective inning of relief of winning pitcher Kayla Meacom.
Game 2
The Lady Braves grabbed a commanding 5-0 lead with three runs in the fourth and a pair in the fifth.
St. Andrews trimmed away at the Chowan lead with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth. After Haugen was hit by a pitch and stole second, Rushing plated Haugen with a single for the Knights first run. A Haugen two-run single in the sixth cut the margin to 5-3.
Chowan answered with three runs in the final frame with a two-run double by Melissa Buzzell and an one-run double by Christina Eteuati. Stephanie Myane picked up the win after going five innings.
For the day, Rushing had five hits and two runs batted in. Haugen followed with three hits, three runs, two RBI, and a stolen base. Dobmeier and Tanji drove in the other two Knights runs.
