Game 1; Game 2

LAURINBURG, NC—The St. Andrews softball team connected for 19 hits during their home and CVAC openers against CVAC rival Anderson University on Saturday, but after the visiting Lady Trojans escaped with a 4-3 (10-innings) victory in game one, AU swept the doubleheader with a 14-6 (5 innings) victory in the nightcap.

Anderson improved to 7-7 overall and 2-0 in the CVAC. The Knights (0-8 overall; 0-2 CVAC) visit CVAC rival Queens University of Charlotte on Monday at 5:00 p.m.

Game 1

After the Lady Trojans scored one run in top half of the first, freshman Anne Dobmeier (Buffalo, NY) answered with a single that plated sophomore Mika Tanji (Honolulu, HI).

Anderson regained a slim 2-1 lead on an RBI double by Ellen Steele in the fourth.

With their backs against the wall, the Knights knotted everything up in the bottom of the seventh. Freshmen Liz Windham (Wartrace, TN) and Brittni York (Indian Trail, NC) led off with back-to-back singles. Tanji advanced Windham and York with a sacrifice bunt and junior Devane Rushing (Monroe, NC) walked to load the bases. The Trojans picked up the second out on a Dobmeier ground ball to shortstop, where they got the force out a home. Senior Amme Mason’s (Georgetown, CA) patience at the plate led to a walk that plated York for the tying run. Senior Bet Smith (Lexington, SC) followed with what looked like the game-winning swing but the Trojan center fielder caught the ball at the top of the fence and robbed Smith of a possible grand slam.

In the third extra frame, Anderson scored two runs on a Maranda Sialmas RBI single and a Kayla Williams double that drove in Sialmas.

Mason cut the final deficit to 4-3 with a single that plated Rushing but Trojan starter Stephanie Griffis (3-4) recorded the final out with her third strikeout. Dobmeier went the distance for the Knights with five K’s.

Game 2

Anderson jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the finale with a nine-run (eight unearned) second. A Sialmas bases-loaded triple highlighted the rally. The Lady Trojans added three runs in the third and a single run in both the fourth and fifth.

Freshman Dani Ghramm (Lake City, ID) put St. Andrews on the board with a RBI groundout in the second. The Knights added four runs in the third. Mason drove in Tanji for the first run. Three consecutive run producing singles by Smith, sophomore Ashley Shurtleff (Colton, CA) and Ghramm capped the run. Dobmeier finished SAPC’s scoring with a double in the fourth.

On the day, Rushing and Dobmeier each had four hits; Mason drove in three runs; and Tanji rounded the bases three times. Dobmeier (0-5) fanned seven Trojans on the day with two more strikeouts in the nightcap.
