Stevan Hernandez enters his twelfth season as a head coach in the St. Andrews athletics department. Hernandez returns to the helm of the men’s program for the second consecutive year after spending the 2009-2010 academic year as the Director of the Annual fund for St. Andrews. In 2006, Hernandez led the St. Andrews men’s soccer team to its best season in the college’s NCAA Division II era with a 13-6-3 overall record and a fourth place finish in the CVAC with a 6-3-1 ledger. The Knights made a run to the conference tournament championship game and were ranked nationally in D-II as one of the top-10 most improved teams. In his first four seasons with the Knights men’s soccer program, Hernandez coached seven All-Conference honorees, three league All-Tournament selections, three conference Players of the Week, two All-Region award winners, and two All-State recipients. Hernandez also served on the NCAA and NSCAA Southeast Regional ranking committee. Hernandez joined the Knight athletic staff in the summer of 1998. He began his tenure as head softball coach in the spring of 1999 and assumed the responsibilities of coaching the re-instated women’s soccer program in the fall of that same year. Hernandez coached the women's soccer program for five years and led the Knights to their first CVAC playoff birth in 2003. Hernandez moved from the women’s team to the men’s in February of 2004. Coach Hernandez holds the NCAA Division II school record for single-season wins for men’s soccer, women’s soccer, and softball. Hernandez earned a Bachelor of Science in recreation administration from Wingate University in 1997 and completed his masters’ degree in Physical Education at UNC Pembroke in 2008. Hernandez holds his Advanced National Diploma from the NSCAA. Hernandez married Elizabeth Bowden in July of 2004. Their son, Jackson, was born November 2, 2008. Stevan, Elizabeth, Jackson and their dog, Humphrey, currently reside in Laurinburg, NC.

Tamas Szalai enters his second season as the Assistant Coach for the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s soccer team. The Hungarian native moved to New York with his parents when he was a teenager and was able to pursue his dream to play soccer. During his high school years, Szalai was named Section IX Player of the Year. Coach Szalai started his college career at nationally ranked Ulster County Community College where he was coached by fellow Hungarian, George Vizvary. During his second season at UCCC, Szalai and his teammates competed in the National Championships against Richland College (Dallas, TX). After graduating from UCCC, Szalai transferred to St. Andrews Presbyterian College; where he played for the men’s soccer team for two seasons. Szalai graduated from SAPC in 2010 with a B.A. in Biology. Since finishing his undergraduate studies, he has become a part of the North Carolina ODP ‘98 boy’s coaching staff and has been on the coaching staff at multiple soccer summer camps across the country, on top of the work he did at St. Andrews last year. As Szalai continues to coach at St. Andrews, he will also be completing work towards a Master’s in Physical Education with a specialization in Sport Administration at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Szalai currently resides in Laurinburg, NC.
