Box Score

Laurinburg, NC-
For a little non-conference soccer action, the men of St. Andrews hosted Newberry College this afternoon. Scoring late in the game, the Knights pulled a 1-0 lead in the second half and stepped up the defense to protect the goal for the last 20:00 minutes of play as they held off the Wolves and put another win in the books.

After playing the first 45:00 minutes, the score remained tied 0-0. Corey Francis (Greenville, NC) saved one shot during the first period, while the SAU offense took an impressive 12 shots at Newberry keeper Joel Johnson, who earned two saves in the first.

Stepping up their play, the Knights added an additional 12 shots in the second half; booting five straight at Johnson, who was in the goal for the Wolves for the entire game. Francis grabbed four saves in the second period for a total of five. Through Francis’ solid defense of the net and the powerful Knights offense, SAU gained a victory and earned Francis another win for his record.

68:29 minutes into the game, Dennis Schardt (Bethesda, MD) found the ball and charged up the field. Running through several defenders, Schardt dribbled towards the box; where he saw teammate Scott Ashbridge (Hazlet, NJ) approaching the goal. As Schardt approached the corner of the box, he sent the ball forward to Ashbridge. As the ball descended, Ashbridge got his foot on it and blasted it into the far left corner of the net, scoring the only goal of the game.

The Knights’ next game will this Saturday, October 22. Marking their final home game of the season, the men’s soccer team will host Limestone College at 3:00 PM, following the women’s game that will start at 1:00 PM. Between the men’s and women’s games, the soccer programs will show their gratitude to the seniors who will be graduating after this season. So, join the Knights for some exciting Conference Carolinas soccer and for ‘Senior Day’ this Saturday (10/22).
