Laurinburg, NC-
With a chill in the air, the St. Andrews men’s soccer team took the field against Conference Carolinas foe North Greenville University in this afternoon’s match up at Knights Field. Both squads fought hard for 90:00 minutes, each adding their share of fouls to the combined game total of 45. SAU was unable to surpass the visiting Crusaders and suffered a 2-5 loss; moving the Knights to 11 th in the conference.

North Greenville (5-2 Conference, 6-4 Overall) secured their number two spot in the Conference Carolinas rankings by scoring the first three goals of today’s game. Ben Allen was first up for the Crusaders when he shot a penalty kick that just missed Knights keeper Corey Francis’ (Greenville, NC) hands. Francis stopped 12 of the Crusaders’ 17 shots on goal during his 90:00 minutes in goal. Luis Mattei scored his first goal of the season for NGU, while Alex Redding added the third Crusader goal.

At a three goal deficit, the Knight took control of the game, taking the score to 2-3 by the time the first half came to a close. Putting the Knights on the board, Brendan Duncan (Monroe, NC) passed the ball to Patrick Stewart (Crawfordville, FL) who was ready to take a shot. After planting his foot, Stewart sent a rocket straight into the net from 15 yards out; blasting the ball through several Crusader defenders and NGU Keeper Stephen Arneson, who saved one of the Knights’ shots on goal. Roughly 15:00 minutes later, SAU freshman Chandler McGill (Phoenix, AZ) hustled by the NGU defenders and scored his first collegiate goal, taking the score to 2-3.

The Knights took a total of 10 shots against the Crusaders, with Scott Ashbridge (Hazlet, NJ), Preston Rolle (Freeport, Bahamas), and Stewart each contributing two shots for SAU.

Unfortunately, their hard work was not enough to top the Crusaders as NGU added two more goals to their first half total. David Frazao and Alex Redding gave North Greenville a game winning 2-5 lead over the Knights thanks to assists from their teammates Jonathan Restrepo and Julian Sanchez.

On Wednesday, October 12 the Knights will head to Misenheimer, NC, for a 4:00 PM game at which they will take on the Falcons of Pfeiffer University. Play will start at the conclusion of the women’s soccer game that is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
