Bristol, TN-
Tension was high as St. Andrews University and King College battled through two overtimes to see who would emerge victorious in today’s Conference Carolinas men’s soccer face-off. With a two-goal lead, the Knights felt comfortable on the field. However, the King Tornado wanted to defend their home turf and reached down deep to find the energy to tie the game at 2-2 after 90:00 minutes. Using an out of bounds ball to their advantage, the Knights pulled out a final burst of energy and scored the game winning goal; giving SAU its first Conference Carolinas men’s soccer victory of the season with a final score of 3-2.

Altogether, the Knights (1-6 Conference, 2-8 Overall) took six shots on goal, giving them a .500 on goal shooting percentage for the game. Alex Smith (Winston-Salem, NC) scored the first goal of the game after freshman keeper Corey Francis (Greenville, NC) booted the ball up the field. Smith received the ball and blasted it into the net from 14 yards out.

Extending the Knight’s lead, Brandon Vaughan (Belleair, FL) launched a ball up the field to teammate Patrick Stewart (Crawfordville, FL) who split the Tornado defenders and put the ball in the net from 15 yards out.

With a two-goal deficit, the Tornado (2-4 Conference, 2-5-1 Overall) fought for a come back. The desperate squad shot eight balls at Francis, allowing him to earn six saves. Tom Winspear, a King College senior, gave the Tornado leverage as he single handedly posted two goals for King; finishing regular play with a tied score, 2-2.

After nearly 15:00 minutes of overtime, a winner had yet to be declared. Finally, at 104:43 the Knights flooded the box to await a corner kick from Smith. Smith lined up his kick, taking aim at the posts. The crowd watched as the ball soared across the field towards the goal. As the shot started to curve towards the net, a Tornado defender stepped in front of the ball; but the power Smith put behind the ball caused it to deflect off of the defender and fly straight into the net, giving the Knights a 3-2 victory over the King Tornado.

The Knights will host the Crusaders of North Greenville University on Thursday, October6. Stop by Knights Field, on the campus of the St. Andrews University, at 4:00 PM to catch the Knights in action.
