Laurinburg, NC-
Conference Carolinas men’s soccer battled an unordinarily cold September day as Queens University of Charlotte (1-0 Conference, 2-1 Overall) traveled to the campus of St. Andrews (0-3, 1-5) for today’s matchup. Both teams played with determination and ended the first half tied 0-0. The Royals pressured the Knights in the second half and took home a 2-0 conference win over St. Andrews.

The fighting Knights tried to work around Queens’ defense, but only managed to take 7 total shots, two of which were saved by Matthew Cavallo, who was in goal for the Royals for the entire game. Corey Francis (Greenville, NC) faced 10 shots on goal and got his hands on eight of them. Francis worked hard for the Knights as he defended the goal from all around the box, stopping many balls before the Royals were able to take a shot.

Sadly the Knights’ attack came up short, as none of their shots found the net. Alex Smith (Winston-Salem, NC) booted two shots for SA, while teammates Edwin Mwangi (Durham, NC), Scott Ashbridge (Hazlet, NJ), Dennis Schardt (Bethesda, MD), and Nowell Worley (Hope Mills, NC) each took a shot at Cavallo. Curtis Kiyabu (Kapolei, HI) also took a shot for the Knights, missing the goal by mere inches as his free kick off of a foul hit the cross bar and ricocheted out of bounds.

In the second half, two Royals forwards found the net after receiving the ball from a teammate. Felipe Netto led Jeremy Chambers to an open spot in front of the goal, earning Netto an assist and giving Chambers his first goal of the season. Less than 10 minutes later, Yannick Fischbach booted a ball in front of the net; allowing teammate Alvaro Guerra to make his second goal of the season by heading the ball over Francis and into the back of the net.

The Knights will be hosted by the Trojans of Mount Olive College (Mount Olive, NC) on Tuesday, September 20 for their next game. Play is scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM, but will commence following the women’s game that will take place at 4:00 PM.
