Knights Soccer Falls to Indians

Laurinburg, NC- St. Andrews Men’s Soccer could not keep up with Catawba College (Salisbury, NC) in this afternoon’s matchup, as they trailed the Indians by four after 90 minutes.

The Knights started off strong with precise ball control, tight defense, and a powerful offense, taking 10 shots in the first half. Alex Smith (Winston-Salem, NC), a junior at SAPC, got things rolling for the Knights by booting a ball into the net after it ricocheted off of the goal post when Dennis Schardt (Bethesda, MD) fired a rocket at the Indians’ keeper, Evan Harvey.

Freshman goalie Corey Francis (Greenville, NC) picked up 10 saves from the 21 shots that were made by the Indians; while sophomore Evan Frye (Rockingham, NC) grabbed one save when he entered as keeper for the last 12 minutes of the game. Harvey, of the Indians, stopped one shot by the Knights earning a save.

Deon Cuffie-Joseph led the attack for Catawba, driving through the St. Andrews defense and starting the Indians’ rally, en route to a 5-1 victory over the Knights. Spencer Preston jumped for a header and tossed the ball by Francis for goal number two by the Indians 30 seconds before half time.

Catawba came back strong and caught the Knights off-guard in the second half, when Ezra Ntirugelegwa’s shot nicked the post and fell into the goal. St. Andrews picked up the pace, but could not overcome the Indians. Catawba sophomore Corey Faughnan sealed the win for the Indians by adding two goals in the last 20 minutes of the game.

The Knights plan to regain their strength over the next two days, before heading to Banner Elk, NC, to go up against Conference Carolinas foe Lees McRae College on Saturday, September 10 3:00 P.M.
