Box Score

Murfreesboro, NC- The St. Andrews Men’s Soccer team claimed its first victory of the season this afternoon. After going into two overtimes against the Hawks of Chowan University (Murfreesboro, NC), the Knights played with heart and dedication until they blew past the Hawks’ defense to take the 2-1 win; giving them a 1-1 overall record.

Defense ensued during play in Murfreesboro, as the first goal was not made until the 24:00 minute mark. Adam Smith (Clinton, NC), a junior at Chowan was the first scorer as he took a power shot from around the 30 yard line; kicking the only ball that got past the Knights’ freshman keeper Corey Francis (Greenville, NC). Francis saved four of the seven shots that were taken by Chowan.

The Knights responded to Chowan early in the second half, as Michael Mutebi (Entebbe, Kampala, Uganda) used an empty net to his advantage and scored from outside the box 12 minutes into the half, tying the game.

St. Andrews took an impressive 38 shots against Ethan Phelps (Ahoskie, NC), who was in goal for the Hawks. Phelps stopped almost one fourth of the Knights shots on goal, grabbing a total of nine saves.

As the 90:00 minutes started to wind down, the game became more intense; each team vying for another goal in order to claim the victory. Tough defense from both squads led to a scoreless first overtime; the dual continued. Finally, in the second overtime, the Knights got a break, literally. Mutebi broke away from the defense, received a pass from teammate Mark Ray (Fleming Island, FL), and turned toward the goal. After planting his foot, Mutebi took the shot…GOOD! Mutebi not only scored his second goal of the game, but also earned Ray an assist and gave the Knights their first win of the 2011 season; giving them a 1-1 overall record.

Look for the Knights again on Wednesday, September 7 as they face Catawba College (Catawba, NC) at Knights Field. Kick off is scheduled for 4:00 P.M.
