Box Score

Pembroke, NC— The short trip up the road to The University of North Carolina at Pembroke started off well for the Knights in the men’s soccer regular season opener, but the Braves prevailed in the second half nabbing a victory over the Knights with a score of 4-1.

The UNC-P Braves (1-0-0) outshot the Knights (0-1-0) by 21, forcing freshman keeper Corey Francis (Greenville, NC) to stay active in the goal. Francis grabbed an impressive 9 saves against the strong, Southeast Region rival Braves.

Both teams held their own in the first half. Strong offense and defense from each squad led to an exciting and competitive start to the game. Sean Hoek (Little Rock, AR), a UNC-P midfielder, posted the first goal of the match. Hoek’s impressive ball handling allowed him to pass the SAPC defenders and blast a close shot 12 minutes into the game. After 15 minutes of strong play from both teams, the Knights responded to Hoek’s goal when Junior Brandon Vaughan (Belleair, FL) followed the ball into the box, snagged it from a defender, and put it in the net; leading to a tied game (1-1) at the end of the half.

The Knight’s could not repeat their break down of the Braves’ defense in the second half, as they were only able to take three shots. UNC-P’s offensive play became more aggressive as the game went on; taking 15 total shots in the second half alone. The Braves started the second half with a goal by Martin Tomter (Drammen, Norway) 1 minute and 44 seconds after play resumed. Shaun Herselman (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Travis Mulford (Richmond, VA) also worked their way through the Knights’ defense to score one goal each for the Braves.

There was by no means a lack of effort by the Knights. The troops played hard until the very end as they tried to prevail over the Braves. Throughout the contest, SAPC’s senior Curtis Kiyabu and freshmen Edwin Mwangi (Durham, NC), Mark Ray (Orange Park, FL), and Ben Farwell (Trappe, MD) each took a shot at Joe Cullip (Tonbridge, England), who was in the goal for the Braves. SAPC junior Alex Smith also took a shot on goal at Cullip, as well as two other shots that were blocked by Braves defenders.

The Knights continue their Southeast Region play Saturday, September 3 as they travel to Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC, for a midday matchup scheduled to start at noon.
