MISENHEIMER, N.C.—Matt Harris scored two goals to lead No. 3 seed Pfeiffer University (11-6-1) to a 3-0 win over No. 6 seed St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Conference Carolinas men’s soccer quarterfinal action Tuesday afternoon.
No. 4 NCAA Southeast Region ranked Falcons improved to 11-6-1 on the season by avenging a 3-2 loss on September 13. The No. 6 ranked Knights, who were without the services of three starters due to prior cautions, fell to 11-6-3.
Pfeiffer advances to Friday’s semifinals where they will play the winner of the Queens/Anderson game at 2:30 p.m. The semis and finals will be played at Mount Olive College.
The first half was fast-paced but resulted in few good scoring chances.
In the 23rd minute the Knights had a free kick from 20-yards out. Freshman Curtis Kiyabu (Kapolei, Hawaii) sent a hard dipping shot that Falcon goalie Alex Moreno made a great save on to keep the game scoreless.
Pfeiffer had a scoring chance in the 28th minute when Renato Barbosa took a through pass and found himself open, 15-yards from goal. His shot got past the keeper but rolled just inches wide of the left post.
At halftime the game remained tied at 0-0. Knights’ freshman goalie William Williams (Denver, Colo.) made his lone save of the game in the first 45 minutes in only his second collegiate start.
The start of the second half was much like the opening stanza until the last twenty minutes when the Falcons exploded for three goals.
Wilver Menacho got the Falcons on the board in the 71st minute when he blasted a back pass from Barbosa into the top of the goal for a 1-0 Pfeiffer lead.
Matt Harris gave Pfeiffer a 2-0 lead in the 78th minute. Patrick Treadwell found Harris open about 15-yards out he put it past the keeper to double the Falcon lead.
With less then five minutes to play Harris finished the scoring. Menacho sent a long cross to the far post and Harris put the ball under the goalie into the far side netting.
SAPC had all four of the corner kicks on the day but also had 19 of the 28 fouls and three of the six yellow cards.
