WINGATE, N.C.—The Wingate University and St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s soccer teams played to a 2-2 tie Wednesday night at the WU Soccer Complex. Match officials halted the contest in the 74th minute due to rainy-and-wet field conditions. The NCAA Division II match will be documented in the record books as a tie.

Wingate, ranked No. 20 in the NSCAA Division II national top-25 poll and ranked second in the NCAA Appalachian region, is 14-3-1 overall. St. Andrews, ranked number four in the Southeast Region, is 11-4-3 overall.

St. Andrews led 2-1 at halftime. Knight freshman forward Carlos Rivera (Fredericksburg, Va.) opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Rivera took a long pass from sophomore midfielder Eric Gomez (Estero, Fla.) and beat Wingate freshman goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) one-on-one. Rivera has three goals this season.

Wingate freshman forward Andru Harris (Duluth, Ga.) tied the contest in the 41st minute with his third goal of the season. Classmate Rory Green (Sleaford, England) found Green with a through-ball and Harris chipped the pass over the head of Knight freshman netminder William Williams (Denver, Colo.).

The visitors wasted little time reclaiming the lead. Knight sophomore midfielder Jarrod Hall (Highland Village, Texas) tallied his first collegiate goal on a rebound shot outside the box. The Knights out-shot the Bulldogs 7-6 in the first half.

Bulldog freshman midfielder Adam Cunningham (Gastonia, N.C.) scored his first career goal in the 47th minute to tie the contest at 2-2. Cunningham was in the right place at the right time, scoring on a rebound from close range.

Wingate took seven shots in the second half, compared to one attempt for St. Andrews Presbyterian. On the evening, Williams recorded five saves in his first collegiate start. Calandra notched two saves for the hosts. Both goalkeepers played the entire 70:31 of the rain-shortened match.

St. Andrews concludes the 2007 regular season with a Conference Carolinas showdown at Belmont Abbey College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
