LAURINBURG, N.C.—St. Andrews Presbyterian College scored three second half goals including the game-winner by junior Coleman Paiva (Raleigh, N.C.) in the 87th minute to rally past Erskine College, 3-2, in Conference Carolinas men’s soccer action on Saturday’s ‘Senior Day’.

The No. 5 Southeast Region ranked Knights, who improved to 11-4-2 overall and 6-3 in the league, out shot the Flying Fleet (6-9-2, 3-4-1) by a 17-10 margin including a commanding 12-3 outburst in the second half.

Erskine scored the only goal of the first half midway through the opening stanza. Sophomore Franz Destin (Stone Mountain, Ga.) converted from close range after corralling a turnover in the St. Andrews box.

The Knights bounced back in the second half after honoring their only two seniors, Jerry Momoh (Trenton, N.J.) and Marcus Gumbrecht (Burlington, N.C.), at halftime.

The Fleet, who were playing down a man in the second half due to a pair of yellow cards, gave up two goals in a seven minute span early on in the final frame.

Sophomore defender Carlos Bustamante (Caracas, Venezuela) scored his first collegiate goal in the 48th minute to tie the game at 1-1. Junior Mickey Padron Jr. (Virginia Beach, Va.) served a long pass into the box that got past the Erskine goalkeeper and Bustamante stuffed away the loose ball.

Bustamante added an assist in the 54th minute when junior Justin Garton (Germantown, Md.) ripped his team-high 15th goal of season to catapult the Knights into the lead.

The Fleet bounced back when Destin made a couple moves and blasted his second tally of the day in the 57th minute.

The match remained deadlocked for the next 20 minutes before Knights’ sophomore Andrew Johnson (Sterling, Va.) made a long throw-in to Paiva, who then turned and riffled a 20-yard goal with 3:16 left.

Junior goalkeeper Nick Stevens (Kernersville, N.C.) made five saves for the Knights for his 11th victory of the season. Erskine senior netminder Jimmy Turner (Leconto, Fla.) stopped a game-high seven shots.

SAPC held an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks but were whistled offside’s more times, 9-6.

St. Andrews visits non-conference foe Wingate University on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. while Erskine hosts Conference Carolinas rival Anderson University on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
