Queens men's soccer rallies past St. Andrews October 9, 2007 In a battle of two Southeast regionally ranked teams, the No. 8 ranked Royals erased a 1-0 halftime deficit to improve to 5-4-3 overall and 3-1-2 in Conference Carolinas play. The No. 4 ranked Knights fell to 8-4-2 and 4-3-0. Knights’ junior goalkeeper Nick Stevens (Kernersville, N.C.) kept the shutout bid in tack through the first 45 minutes making four of his game-high six saves in the first half. Queens came out of the intermission on fire Burroughs buried two goals in a 10-minute span, catapulted the visitors into the lead. In the 50th minute junior Kevin O’Donnell (Prince George, Va.) ripped a stinging corner kick that made its way through the box to Burroughs, who then finished off the equalizer. Burroughs then put Queens on top for good in the 59th minute by taking control of a loss ball and then firing the game-winner into the back of the Knights goal. Burroughs two tallies doubled his season total to four goals. Royals’ sophomore Dan Williams (Kingwood, Texas) held off St. Andrews comeback attempt by making all five of his saves in the second frame. Queens held a slim 13-12 lead on shots but were flagged off sides more times, 6-1. SAPC had a 7-4 edge on corner kicks. St. Andrews hosts non-conference Chowan University on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. while the Royals visit Conference Carolinas rival Belmont Abbey College next Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. |
Senior Jerry Momoh (Trenton, N.J.) started the scoring midway through the first with his fifth goal of the season. After a Royals player popped the ball high in the air on a failed clearing attempt, Momoh was able to head the ball into the Royals net from close range in the 23rd minute.
