BANNER ELK, N.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s soccer team made a valet attempt at pulling off an improbably upset this weekend making the long trek to the mountains to battle No. 3 nationally ranked Lees-McRae College on their homecoming weekend in a Conference Carolinas showdown Saturday.
St. Andrews only trailed by one goal in the final minutes of the game but the hosts were able to hang on for the 3-1 victory. The Bobcats improved to 11-1-1 overall and 6-1 in the league while the Knights maintain 8-3-2 and 4-2 records after having their season-best seven game undefeated streak snapped.
LMC fed off the big home crowd and was able to take a 1-0 lead midway through the first half on a Lee Squires goal. After the halftime intermission, the Bobcats doubled up their lead with a goal by Berin Boracic.
The Knights never quit and junior Justin Garton (Germantown, Md.) pulled the visitors to within one late with his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Freshman Chris Weedon (San Angelo, Texas) assisted Garton on the late score.
SAPC took chances in the final minute trying to score the equalizer but the Bobcats were able to counter and Boracic was able to score his second goal of the day in the final seconds.
Junior Nick Stevens (Germantown, Md.) made a game-high eight saves to keep the Knights in the contest. Freshman Brian Humphrey (Jacksonville, N.C.) had a team-high three shots on goal for SAPC.
