PEMBROKE, N.C.—Junior forward Justin Garton (Germantown, Md.) scored the game-tying goal with 8:43 left in regulation and then scored the golden goal in the first overtime period, lifting the visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s soccer team to a dramatic 3-2 non-conference victory over UNC-Pembroke on Saturday evening.

The come-from-behind win was the Knights fourth consecutive victory, improving their record to 6-2-1 on the season. SAPC, currently ranked No. 5 in the Southeast Region, will go for five straight when they host non-conference USC-Aiken on Wednesday afternoon at 5:00 p.m.

Pembroke (1-6 overall) took a commanding 2-0 lead with a pair of first half goals. Zach Rowell got the Braves on the board in the 17th minute and Miguel Ferrer doubled the UNCP advantage with a tally in the 20th. Michael Barnhorst assisted on both goals that were just 2 minutes and 33 seconds apart.

St. Andrews had several scoring chances out shooting the hosts by an 18-11 margin but they were unable to convert until late into the second half. Freshman Curtis Kiyabu (Kapolei, Hawaii) broke up the shutout attempt with his second goal of the season in the 71st minute. Kiyabu finished off a Garton crossing pass to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Garton tied the contest at the 81:17 mark with a goal off an assist by Kiyabu, who leads SAPC with five helpers on the season. Garton then ended the game just 1:54 into the first overtime period by scoring on a fast break that was started on a freshman Brian Humphrey (Jacksonville, N.C.) pass.

Garton, who has scored a goal in three straight games, finished with a five-point performance. Garton leads the Knights with six goals and 13 points.

Junior goalkeeper Nick Stevens (Kernersville, N.C.) earned his fourth straight win in net for the Knights, making four saves against the Braves including two quick stops in overtime.
