LAURINBURG, N.C.—Freshman Carlos Rivera (Fredericksburg, Va.) scored his first collegiate goal helping No. 5 Southeast Region ranked St. Andrews Presbyterian College to a 2-0 shutout of visiting Barton College on a windy Wednesday afternoon in Conference Carolinas men’s soccer action.
The Knights, winners of three straight games, improved to 5-2-1 on the season and 2-1 in the conference. The Bulldogs fell to 2-5-1 and 0-2-1.
Rivera put St. Andrews on the board with the eventual game-winner just before halftime. After getting the ball inside the Barton box on a nice feed from senior Jerry Momoh (Trenton, N.C.), Rivera scored with exactly two minutes left before the intermission. Momoh, the reigning Conference Carolinas Player of the Week, increased his team-high point total to 10 points.
Junior Justin Garton (Germantown, Md.) added an insurance goal for the Knights by taking advantage of a Barton giveaway in their defensive third and stuffing away his fourth goal of the season in the 67th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Stevens (Kernersville, N.C.) only needed to make two saves over 90 minutes to earn his first shutout and fifth win of 2007.
The Knights out shot the Bulldogs 16-8 but senior goalie Matt Coble (Kernersville, N.C.) kept the visitors in the game with nine saves including three stops on freshman Brian Humphrey (Jacksonville, N.C.).
St. Andrews visits non-conference local rival UNC-Pembroke on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. while Barton will be playing Conference Carolinas foe Lees-McRae College (Banner Elk, N.C.) at the same time.
