MISENHEIMER, N.C.—Freshman midfielder Chris Weedon (San Angelo, Texas) lifted visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College to a 3-2 Conference Carolinas men’s soccer victory, scoring the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute, and snapping a five game win streak for host Pfeiffer University on Thursday afternoon.

The Knights, who are currently ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA/adidas Southeast Regional poll, improved to 3-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in Conference Carolinas action. The No. 4 regional ranked Falcons fell to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.

“Pfeiffer is a very good team that is deep and does not give up,” said fourth year head coach Stevan Hernandez. “Our guys remained focused and we stuck to our game plan. That was what helped us win on the road against a talented team.”

The Falcons jumped on top quickly to start the contest when Matthew Harris scored his seventh goal of the season, just three minutes and 20 seconds into play. Pfeiffer maintained the 1-0 lead through the first half.

St. Andrews responded back out of the intermission with a pair of goal in the first seven minutes of the second half to catapult into the lead. Freshman forward Brian Humphrey (Jacksonville, N.C.) put the Knights on the board in the 48th minute by beating the Pfeiffer defense and then drilling a well-placed shot inside the far post. Less than four minutes later, senior midfielder Jerry Momoh (Trenton, N.J.) scored the next SAPC goal in the 52nd minute. Junior Coleman Paiva (Raleigh, N.C.) started the scoring opportunity by connecting with Humprey on the right wing, who then quickly centered a nice pass to Momoh inside the box. Momoh finished the play off by banging in his third goal of the season.

“We were mentally ready to play even though we gave up an early goal,” added Hernandez. “We fought through that and did what we do best and controlled the ball.”

The Falcons, who have already played in four overtime games, attempted to force another extended match when Matthew Denton tied the game at two apiece with a tally in the 69th minute.

Weedon finished off Pfeiffer with his late-game heroics. Weedon was fed the ball from freshman Zeke Sanders (Monroe, N.C.). After trapping the ball, Weedon made an incredible move past a Falcon defender and ripping the game-winner into the back of the net. Weedon has two goals on the season.

“We did not start off the way we wanted to but we remained focused and composed,” commented Hernandez. “We started to execute our game plan and opportunities started to open up. We made adjustments at halftime to put an extra forward midfielder into the game and that was a tremendous help to us on offense.”

Junior netminder Nick Stevens (Kernersville, N.C.) preserved his third win in goal for the Knights making four of his five saves in the second half. Humphrey’s goal and assist increases his team-high point total to eight points (3 goals, 2 assists).

“With our ability to win against a team like Pfeiffer, I now expect us to play this way day-in and day-out,” concluded Hernandez.

St. Andrews will visit non-conference North Greenville University (Tigerville, S.C.) on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
