ANDERSON, S.C.—Senior midfielder Jerry Momoh (Trenton, N.J.) scored a late goal to tie the Conference Carolinas opener for St. Andrews Presbyterian College, but host Anderson University squeaked out the 2-1 men’s soccer victory on Saturday afternoon at Smethers Field.
Paulo Passini put Anderson (2-3-0 overall; 1-0-0 Conference Carolinas) on the board in the first minute of the match. Passini’s placed a header from a Stephon Henry pass into the back of the St. Andrews (2-2-1; 0-1-0) net to catapult the Trojans to a 1-0 lead just 22 seconds into play.
The hosts continued to hold onto the one-goal lead until Momoh broke up the shutout attempt with his second score of the season. Momoh knocked in a loose ball for the equalizer in the 72nd minute.
Anderson responded quickly and regained the lead for good just six minutes later. Jaime Henao collected a loose ball off a deflected shot by Rayon Markland and deposited the game-winner in the 78th minute.
The Knights held a 12-8 shot advantage including a game-high three attempts from freshman Curtis Kiyabu (Kapolei, Hawaii). SAPC had multiple scoring chances including 11 corner kicks compared to only four by AU.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Stevens (Kernersville, N.C.) made four saves for the Knights while Adrian Osborne stopped a game-high six shots for the Trojans.
St. Andrews will try and bounce back when they visit Conference Carolinas rival Pfeiffer University (Misenheimer, N.C.) on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
