LAURINBURG, N.C.—Junior midfielder Justin Garton (Germantown, Md.) scored on a penalty kick with 6:01 left in regulation, helping host St. Andrews Presbyterian College erase an early goal deficit and tie Florida Institute of Technology, 1-1, in a double-overtime NCAA men’s soccer game on Sunday afternoon.
Garton’s first goal of the season extended the Knights unbeaten streak to three games. SAPC holds 2-1-1 overall record while the Panthers maintain a 0-2-1 ledger.
Florida Tech jumped out to a one-goal lead in the 11th minute. Freshman Adam Busshaus (Melbourne, Fla.) tallied his first collegiate goal at the 10:35 mark after being fed a centering pass from classmate Tyson Eyo (Liverpool, England).
FIT maintained control of the first half out shooting St. Andrews 5-2 and holding onto the 1-0 advantage at the halftime intermission.
The Knights came out of the break with more energy and controlling most of the play for the second 45 minutes. SAPC held a 9-5 shot edge in the second frame and finally broke onto the scoreboard in the 84th minute. Junior goalkeeper Nick Stevens (Kernersville, N.C.) played the final 65 minutes for the Knights and made five key saves in the second half giving St. Andrews the opportunity to tie the match. Senior starting goalie Marcus Gumbrecht (Burlington, N.C.) had two stops in his first appearance of the year.
