LAURINBURG, N.C.—Junior defender Mickey Padron Jr. (Germantown, Md.) broke a late tie, scoring the game-winning goal in the final two minutes to lift host St. Andrews Presbyterian College to a 3-2 men’s soccer victory over Brevard College on Wednesday afternoon.

Padron’s first collegiate goal improved the Knights to 2-1 overall in the first week of the season. The Tornados fell to 1-1.

Sophomore Eric Gomez (Estero, Fla.) started the scoring for St. Andrews, finishing off a centering pass from freshman Brian Humphrey (Jacksonville, N.C.) in the ninth minute. Humphrey leads the Knights with five points on the season. SAPC maintained the 1-0 advantage through the intermission as the players competed in light rain for most of the first half.

Freshman Chris Weedon (San Angelo, Texas) doubled the Knights lead early in the second half. Weedon stuffed his first collegiate goal into the back of the Brevard goal after freshman Curtis Kiyabu (Kapolei, Hawaii) fed him the ball. Kiyabu has a team-high three assists on the year.

Brevard was able to break up the shutout attempt in the 61st minute when junior Kyle Hamilton converted on a penalty kick. Freshman Miro Mustonen tied the game with 15 minutes left, ripping a freshman Kyle Stanforth (Orlando, Fla.) corner kick into the goal.

The Knights, who out shot Brevard 14-5, kept putting themselves in scoring situations and finally finished off the Tornado’s with only two minutes left. During a counter attempt, Weedon connected with a flying Padron for a breakaway. After a couple dribbles, Padron directed a well-placed shot past the extended goalkeeper and inside the far post to propel SAPC into the lead.

Junior Nick Stevens (Kernersville, N.C.) picked up his second straight victory in net for the Knights making a game-high three saves.

St. Andrews will entertain Florida Tech on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
