LAURINBURG, N.C.—The visiting Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team scored a pair of goals in the first nine minutes of the season en route to a 3-0 shutout of host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on a steamy Saturday afternoon.

The Sailfish open the season 1-0 by getting goals from a trio of players while the Knights begin the year 0-1.

PBA wasted little time grabbing a quick two-goal lead in the 100-plus degree heat, scoring the first two tallies 90 seconds apart in the first 10 minutes of the contest. Sophomore Cheyne Roberts (Plant City, Fla.) drilled a free kick in the seventh minute that found its way through the SAPC wall and to an open senior Matt Sweesy (Simpsonville, S.C.), who placed the shot into the back of the goal. Ninety second later, sophomore Johnathan Clark (Lakeland, Fla.) served a short corner-kick to junior Chance Sumner (Valrico, Fla.), who then drilled a long blast from outside the box just inside the far post.

After the opening 10 minutes, both teams played an even game with the Sailfish finishing with a slim 14-13 shot advantage. Roberts, who finished with a goal and an assist, added an insurance goal for Palm Beach Atlantic in the 56th minute by converting on a penalty kick.

Sophomore goalkeeper Joseph Yurchak (Lakeland, Fla.) made five saves in 90 minutes of work for the visitors to post his first shutout of the season. Knights’ netminder Nick Stevens (Kernersville, N.C.) made a game-high six stops.

St. Andrews best scoring change came with 30 minutes left in the game, as senior Jerry Momoh (Trenton, N.J.) rifled back-to-back shots on goal but Yurchak made both clutch saves. Momoh had five of the Knights shots including four of SAPC’s five on frame.

Both teams were whistled for 15 fouls and three yellow cards while Palm Beach Atlantic held a commanding 8-2 advantage on corner kicks.

St. Andrews will try and get into the win column tomorrow (Sunday) as they visit the University of North Georgia (Dahlonega, Ga.) at 5:00 p.m. The Sailfish host Florida Tech on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
