St. Andrews Hosts Summer Soccer Camp
June 29, 2004
LAURINBURG, NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College soccer teams hosted the 1st Annual SA Soccer Academy at the Knights Athletics Complex from June 25-29.
The first-year event has been a success for co-organizers Stevan Hernandez (men’s head coach at St. Andrews) and Tom Frambach (assistant coach at NC State and a coach at CASL in Raleigh). The camp has brought in approximately 100 high school soccer players from both North and South Carolina. There are five girls’ teams and four boys’ teams that are participating in the events along with some individuals. Schools that are represented at the Academy are Claymore, Scotland Union, Franklinton, Jack Britt, Carolina Forest, Pinecrest, Richmond, and East Montgomery.
The athletes received instruction from about 15 members of the camps staff including Hernandez, Frambach, the head men’s coach at Limestone, the head women’s coach at Methodist, a former Northwestern player, and several St. Andrews soccer players.
The daily activities include instruction and training on technical and tactical skills from the staff in the mornings and afternoons. In the evenings each school competed in head-to-head matches that made the long days more enjoyable for the players.
All of the players are staying on campus in the St. Andrews residence halls throughout the week. The camp also provided meals and swim time for everyone.
The staff has been pleased with the camp as Frambach said, “It’s been an exciting week for all of us as we have had a good turnout for the first year. The staff has worked hard and the kids have been great.” Hernandez added, “The turnout has been outstanding for the first year and we look forward to expanding the camp for next year.”
The Knights soccer teams, members of the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference, will begin regular season play in early September.
