By: Philip Ratchford, Sports Information

Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University Athletic Department will be selecting one male and one female as the “Knights-of-the-Month” in order to help recognize the outstanding student-athletes who proudly wear the Blue and White. The honor will be representative of the student-athletes’ accomplishments from the previous month, not only on the field, but also in the classroom and on campus.

Olivia Taylor has been selected as the first female Knight-of-the-Month for SAU. Taylor is a starter and three-year letter winner for the women’s soccer team. This season, she has earned two goals and four points, while taking 17 shots total. Playing in every game so far this season, Taylor contributes not only to the SAU offense as previously mentioned, but also adds to the squad from a defensive perspective. “Olivia has been a great role model for our team this season. She gives 100% every time she steps onto the field and she always puts her team first. She is respected by her teammates because of her hard work on the field and her great work in the classroom. She will be missed very much when she graduates,” says Head Women’s Soccer Coach Rohan Naraine. The Fountain Inn, SC, native acts as a Resident Advisor and is a member of the Student Government Association, where she is the Community Honor Committee Student Representative. Taylor is set to graduate in December 2011 with a B.A. in Therapeutic Horsemanship and an Equine Business minor. As a member of the community, she also donates her time at the Ride-Like-A-Knight Therapeutic Riding Center where she is a PATH Int. Certified Instructor and volunteer.

James “Bear” Walls has just completed his fourth competitive season as a member of the SAU men’s cross country team. During the month of September, Walls posted impressive times and earned some remarkable finishes. The Bear Creek, NC, native came in first for the Knights at every race the Fab Five attended. In the first race of the season, Walls grabbed a 3 rd place finish at Mount Olive College with a time of 16:05.50. In his next appearance, “Bear” snagged 8 th place at the UNC-Wilmington Invitational by completing the race in 16:10.59. While in Charleston, SC, he was the 2 nd place finisher for the D-II harriers at the Bulldog Invitational hosted by the Citadel, clocking a time of 28:10.94 in the 8k race. In addition to working as a Resident Advisor, Walls is actively completing a Spanish minor, after already completing the courses needed for a B.A. in Sports and Recreation Studies. Walls plans to graduate in December 2011 and find a job in the sports industry.

Please join us in congratulating these two outstanding student-athletes for their person, scholastic, and athletic achievements. The SAU Athletic Department would like to thank you for all that you do for Knights Athletics and for St. Andrews.
