HICKORY, N.C.—Senior Matthew Rogers (Eatonton, Ga.) won the shot put and set new school records in the discus and hammer throws to highlight competition for the St. Andrews men’s track & field team at the Lenoir-Rhyne PowerSox Invitational on Saturday.

Rogers defeated 12 other competitors in the shot put with his best heave of the weighted ball this season. Rogers launched the shot put 13.70 meters to win the event. Rogers also set new SAPC school records in two other throwing disciplines. Rogers took fourth out of eight in the hammer throw (37.70m) and fifth out of 12 in the discus (37.83m).
Classmate Allen Kiefer (Raleigh, N.C.) also competed in two throwing events, placing eighth in the javelin throw with a PR distance of 41.38m and ninth in the shot put with a measurement of 10.20m.
A quartet of Knights sprinters teamed up to set a third SAPC school record on the day in the 4x100m relay. Senior Charles Phillips (Decatur, Ga.), sophomore Antonio Moffitt (Raleigh, N.C.), freshman Domonique Holliday (High Point, N.C.), and freshman Derrick Richardson (Mt. Gilead, N.C.) posted a new SAPC school record time of 43.88 seconds to take fifth place out of seven teams in the 4x100.
Moffitt also led St. Andrews in both the 100 and 200 meter sprints with times of 11.42 and 23.06 seconds, respectively, to finish in the upper half of each competition at 10th and 11th place. Richardson (11.50) and Holliday (11.67) each had PR’s in the 100 while Holliday (23.11) added a second PR in the 200. Richardson (23.60) and Phillips (25.21) also competed in the 200.
Phillips added a third place finish in the triple jump (12.49m) and a seventh place showing in the long jump (6.20m). Sophomore Domonique Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) also participated in a pair of jumping events, logging measurements of 5.36m in the long jump and a PR distance of 1.80m in the high jump.
The Knights raced in three mid-to-long distance races with junior Josh Pickett (Asheville, N.C.) leading the Royal Blue & White in both the 800 and 1500 meter runs. Pickett rushed across the finish line in a PR time of 2:02.62 to place sixth out of 25 runners in the 800. Pickett also finished in the upper half of the field in the 1500 with another PR time of 4:15.81.
Four other Knights raced in the 1500 with junior James Walls (Bear Creek, N.C.) leading the pack with a time of 4:22.93. Senior Brad McKee (Kings Mountain, N.C.) had a PR time of 4:34.55 while juniors Tommy Wilson (Salisbury, N.C.) and Jon Lecker (Minneola, Fla.) capped the race with times of 4:37.98 and 4:45.58, respectively.
A trio of Knights accounted for one-third of the field in the 5000 meter run, with James Walls placing fifth out of nine harriers with an endurance speed of 16:46.68. Lecker followed in 17:58.89 and McKee wrapped up the race at 18:48.89.
St. Andrews will compete in the second Conference Carolinas Track & Field Championships hosted by Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C., on Friday & Saturday, April 16-17 at the Dickerson Athletics Complex.
