WILMINGTON, N.C.—Senior Matthew Rogers (Eatonton, Ga.) highlighted the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s track & field team’s season-opening competition at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington by breaking his school record in the discus throw.

Rogers, who competed in three events to start his final season, hurled the discus 36.27 meters to break his own SAPC school record by almost one full meter. Rogers also posted distances of 12.43m in the shot put and 33.44m in the hammer throw. Rogers placed 10th, 11th, and 12th in the three competitions that featured strong opposition.
The Knights finished tied for eighth out of 10 teams beating Wake Forest University with 10 points. The field was mostly comprised of NCAA Division I institutions including Wake Forest, UNCW, Buffalo, Northeastern, North Dakota, and East Carolina.
SAPC scored nine of its 10 team points in the 5000-meter run. Junior James Walls (Bear Creek, N.C.) led a trio of Knights across the finish line at 16:33.99, which was good for fifth place overall out of 13 entrants. Classmate Tommy Wilson (Salisbury, N.C.) followed in ninth place at 17:46.87 while senior Jon Lecker (Minneola, Fla.) placed 11th at 18:04.06.
A quintet of Knights endurance runners also competed in the 1500m run with junior Josh Pickett (Asheville, N.C.) placing the group at 4:24.08. Walls crossed the finish just three seconds later at 4:27.53 as Pickett and Walls claimed 19th and 22nd, respectively, out of 34 harriers. Lecker led the next three SAPC runners at 4:44.49, followed side-by-side with senior Brad McKee (Kings Mountain, N.C.) at 4:44.59 while Wilson concluded the race in 4:47.91.
Pickett finished in the upper half of the field in the 800-meter run, taking 14th overall out of 30 participants with a speed of 2:04.46. McKee also raced with a time of 2:20.88.
In the sprints, the freshman duo of Dominique Holliday (High Point, N.C.) and Derrick Richardson (Mt. Gilead, N.C.) both sent impressive benchmark times in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Holliday broke the St. Andrews school record in the 200, blazing across in 23.44 seconds while Richardson followed in 24.30. Holliday (11.87) and Richardson (11.92) also finished neck-and-neck in the 100.
Senior Charles Phillips (Decatur, Ga.) highlighted a trio of Knights jumpers, earning one team point in the high jump with a leap of 1.80 meters. Sophomore Domonique Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) also competed in the high jump, tallying a distance of 1.75m. Hollins and Holliday also lifted off the ground in the long jump for the Knights with benchmark measurements of 5.47m and 6.01m, respectively.
St. Andrews track & field next competes in the Braves Classic hosted by UNC Pembroke on Wednesday.
