HICKORY, N.C.—Senior Charles Phillips (Decatur, Ga.) and junior Matthew Rogers (Eatonton, Ga.) both set a pair of school records while senior Mitch Cooper (Virginia Beach, Va.) won two individual titles to lead the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s track & field team at the 2009 Lenoir-Rhyne PowerSox Invitational on Saturday.
Phillips set new SAPC school records in the 200 meter dash and high jump while Rogers set new benchmarks in the shot put and discus. Junior Cameron Cofield (Chesapeake, Va.) also helped rewrite the Knights record books with the program’s fastest time in the 100 meter dash.
Cooper continues to dominate distance running events for the Knights by claiming the individual title in both the 5000m run and the 3000m steeplechase. Cooper led 14 runners to the finish line in the 5000m run with a blazing speed of 15:55.90. Cooper won his third straight 3000m steeplechase title this season with the only sub-10 minute time of 9:57.10.
Phillips was the runner-up out of 11 entrants in the long jump distance of 6.41m. Phillips just missed winning the event with one Division I jumper finishing ahead of him by just two-hundredths of a meter. Cofield also finished in the top-half of the field with a fifth place showing after recording a length of 6:27m.
A trio of Knights competed in the high jump with Phillips taking fourth out of 12 competitors with a school record distance of 1.85m. Freshman Dominique Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) registered a mark of 1.75m while Cofield leaped 1.70m. Cofield and Phillips wrapped up the Knights competition in the jumping events in the triple jump. Cofield set a new PR of 12.51m and Phillips had a mark of 12.23m.
Cofield and Phillips also competed in a couple of sprint events and were able to set a pair of school records in the process. Cofield darted across the 100m dash straightaway with a time of 11.84 seconds (SR) while Phillips scurried through the 200m dash in 24.00 seconds (SR).
Rogers competed in three throwing events and walked away with two new school records. Rogers finished fourth out of 10 throwers in the shot put with a school record heave of 12.50m. Rogers added a pair of sixth place results with a school record 35.46m toss in the discus and a 34.21m chuck in the hammer throw. Junior Allen Kiefer (Raleigh, N.C.) also participated in the throwing events and set PR’s of 10.19m in the shot put and 35.31m in the javelin throw.
Sophomore Doug Holt (Haddonfield, N.J.) had a couple good showings along side of Cooper in the distance events finishing third in both the 3000m steeplechase (10:15.89) and 5000m run (16:12.97). Other Knights results in the 5000m run included sophomore James Walls (Bear Creek, N.C.) with a speed of 17:13.27; sophomore Tommy Wilson (Salisbury, N.C.) clocking in at 17:46.62; junior James Lloyd (Lusby, Md.) following in 17:55.14; and junior Brad McKee (Kings Mountain, N.C.) concluding in 19:55.16.
Walls paced five St. Andrews harriers in the 1500m run with a time of 4:31.49. Wilson was next at 4:42.87 followed closely by Lloyd in exactly one second later at 4:43.87. McKee and junior Jon Lecker (Minneola, Fla.) wrapped up the race with times of 4:50.67 and 5:04.22, respectively. Lecker and senior Patrick Hogan (Denton, N.C.) also raced in the 800m run. Lecker had a time of 2:23.30 while Hogan stopped the timer in 2:36.68.
A quartet of Knights also participated in the men’s 4x100m relay with Phillips, McKee, Cofield, and Pickett teaming up to finish the race in 48.77 seconds.
St. Andrews will compete in the inaugural Conference Carolinas Track & Field Championships hosted by Lees-McRae College on Friday & Saturday, April 17-18 in Banner Elk, N.C.
