PEMBROKE, N.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s track & field team took five of the top-six spots in the 5000m run including the top-four spots to highlight the teams competition at the 2009 Braves Track & Field Classic hosted by UNC Pembroke on Wednesday afternoon at the Taylor Track Complex.

Senior Mitch Cooper (Virginia Beach, Va.) won the 5000m run with a blazing speed of 16:05.73. Sophomore Doug Holt (Haddonfield, N.J.) was just five seconds behind to take the runner-up honors with a personal record (PR) time of 16:10.40. Sophomore James Walls (Bear Creek, N.C.) claimed third at 16:40.95; classmate Tommy Wilson (Salisbury, N.C.) was fourth at 17:27.27 (PR); and junior Brad McKee (Kings Mountain, N.C.) crossed the finish line in sixth at 17:57.27.
Cooper won two individual titles on the day with a victory in the 3000m Steeplechase. Cooper was 10 seconds off his PR with a winning time of 9:44.75. Holt once again finished second to Cooper with a PR speed of 9:51.59. Junior James Lloyd (Lusby, Md.) added a fifth place showing with a time of 11:12.66.
SAPC junior Matthew Rogers (Eatonton, Ga.) had a record setting afternoon with a couple high finishes in the throwing events for the Knights. Rogers placed second out of 15 entrants in the hammer throw by breaking his school record in the event for the second straight competition. Rogers tossed the hammer 36.23m for his new PR. Rogers added a third place showing out of 17 competitors in the shot put. Rogers heaved the 16-pound shot put 12.16m for another school record. Rogers capped his day finishing in the top-half of the field in the discus throw with a chuck of 31.99m.
Junior Allen Kiefer (Raleigh, N.C.) also competed in the shot put and he posted a measurement of 8.87m.
A trio of Knights took flight in the jumping events. Freshman Dominique Hollins (Columbia, S.C.) tied the St. Andrews school record in the men’s high jump with a height of 1.78m in his first collegiate track & field competition.
Junior Cameron Cofield (Chesapeake, Va.) and senior Charles Phillips (Decatur, Ga.) both registered distances in the men’s long jump and triple jump. Cofield just missed the school record of 6.47m in the long jump with a new PR of 6.43 while Phillips added a distance of 6.25m. Both competed in the triple jump but distances were unavailable.
Phillips finished in top-half of 16 sprinters in the 400m dash with a time of 53.66.
Walls led six Knights harriers to the finish line in the 1500m run. Walls had a PR time of 4:22.34 to finish fourth out of 18 entrants. Sophomore Josh Pickett (Asheville, N.C.) sped across in eighth place with a speed of 4:37.11. The final four SAPC runners all posted PR’s in the 1500 including McKee at 4:40.49; Wilson with a time of 4:42.53; junior Jon Lecker (Minneola, Fla.) following at 4:48.46; and freshman William Foronda (Chesapeake, Va.) concluding at 4:56.51.
Lecker paced a trio of Knights in the 800m run with a PR time of 2:18.39. Foronda and senior Patrick Hogan (Denton, N.C.) followed with PR times of 2:23.52 and 2:24.09, respectively.
St. Andrews next competes in the Lenoir-Rhyne University PowerSox Invitational at Bears Field in Hickory, N.C. on Saturday, April 11.
