Lady Knights compete at Western Carolina Invite
March 28-29, 2008 CULLOWHEE, N.C.—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s track & field team competed in five events at the 2008 Western Carolina University Invitational at the Catamount Athletic Complex on Friday and Saturday. The Lady Knights competed in the primarily NCAA Division I competition that included Western Carolina, The College of Charleston, Wake Forest University, and UNC Asheville. Freshman Kristin Zipkin (Canton, Ga.) had the Lady Knights best finish with a runner-up showing in the shot put. Zipkin barely beat her old person record (PR) with a heave of 11.69-meters to finish second out of 15 entrants. Zipkin also competed in the hammer throw, finishing eighth with a distance of 21.97m. Senior Tessa Franz (Warren, Ore.) rounded out the Knights participation in throwing events with a respectable fourth place finish out of 14 competitors in the javelin throw. Franz just missed her school record distance of 35.84m with a throw of 35.72m. The St. Andrews distance runners raced in two endurance races. Senior Veronica Gobeyn (Mullins, S.C.) was the only Knight to compete in both the 1,500 and 5,000 meter runs. Gobeyn finished seventh in the 5,000 with a time of 21:27.08 while adding another top-10 finish in the 1,500 with a speed of 5:21.63. Junior Alyson Trovato (Cedar Park, Texas) led four Lady Knights in the 1,500 meter run with a blazing speed of 5:00.70. Trovato, who finished the race behind four D-I runners, placed fifth out of 17 entrants. Sophomore Lauren Crabb (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and freshman Danielle Martin (Newport, N.C.) rounded out the Knights competition in the 1,500 with times of 6:48.27 and 6:58.83, respectively. St. Andrews next competes at the Duke-Asics Invitational (Durham, N.C.) at the Wallace Wade Stadium on Friday and Saturday, April 4-5. |
