WILMINGTON, N.C.—Five of six Lady Knights competing at the 2008 Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington on Friday and Saturday set new personal records (PR’s) including five new school records.
Junior Alyson Trovato (Cedar Park, Texas) had a pair of seventh place finishes in the primarily NCAA Division I filled field setting school records in both the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter runs. Trovato becomes the first Lady Knight to break the five minute barrier in the 1,500 with a time of 4:59.46 breaking her old school record by over seven seconds. Trovato then added another seventh place finish in the 5,000 by destroying her old record by 38 seconds with a fast time of 18:46.24. Trovato’s speeds in both events were the fastest Division II times.
A trio of St. Andrews throwers had incredible days including a record setting day by freshman Kristin Zipkin (Canton, Ga.). In her first track & field competition of her collegiate career, Zipkin finished third out of 18 competitors in the shot put. Zipkin broke the SAPC record by over three meters, exploding for a distance of 11.63m. Zipkin finished third behind two D-I entrants. Sophomore Tyler Lee (Hillsborough, N.C.) also had a PR in the shot put with a length of 8.49m.
Lee and Zipkin kept up their big days in the hammer and discus throws. Lee heaved the hammer for a new school record distance of 23.59m and then whipped the discus 25.68m. Zipkin chucked the hammer 22.04m and flung the discus 22.46m in her first-ever tries in both events.
For the second straight competition to start the ’08 season, senior Tessa Franz (Warren, Ore.) broke her own school in the javelin throw. Franz finished seventh at the Seahawk Invitational behind six Division I throwers with a PR distance of 35.84-meters.
Senior Veronica Gobeyn (Mullins, S.C.) and sophomore Lauren Crabb (Kalamazoo, Mich.) also competed in the 1,500m run. Trovato crossed the finish line in 5:20.38 while Crabb set a new PR by almost one minute with a time of 6:29.20. Gobeyn added a time of 20:49.53 in the 5,000.
The Lady Knights totaled nine new personal records on the weekend.
St. Andrews has three straight Division I hosted competitions on their schedule as they next battle in the Western Carolina Invitational (Cullowhee, N.C.) on Friday & Saturday, March 28-29.
