Trovato & Franz win at Braves Track & Field Classic
March 8, 2008 PEMBROKE, N.C.—Junior Alyson Trovato (Cedar Park, Texas) won two distance races and senior Tessa Franz (Warren, Ore.) won the javelin throw to lead the St. Andrews Presbyterian College women’s track & field team in the squads season-opening competition -- the 2008 Braves Track & Field Classic hosted by UNC Pembroke -- on Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track Complex. St. Andrews battled a strong wind and five other colleges on Saturday with the Lady Knights winning half of the events they competed in at the Braves Classic. Trovato dominated the distance events winning both the 1,500 and 3,000 meter runs. Trovato captured first place honors in the 1,500 with a dominating time of 5:12.99, winning by almost 10 seconds. Trovato then garnered the gold medal in the 3,000 with a blazing personal record speed of 11:14.83, coasting home to the victory by almost 15 seconds. Trovato defeated seven other competitors in both events. Franz picked up another win for the Lady Knights by defeating five UNCP throwers in the javelin throw. Franz’ long toss of 35.21-meters won the event and broke her old school record at SAPC by over a half of a meter. Sophomore Tyler Lee (Hillsborough, N.C.) had an impressive day for the Lady Knights in three throwing events. Lee finished third in the discus throw by breaking her old school record with a distance of 29.70m. Lee then set a SAPC benchmark distance of 22.11-meters in the school’s inaugural try at the hammer throw. Lee capped her busy day by registering 7.29m in the shot put. Senior Veronica Gobeyn (Mullins, S.C.) and sophomore Lauren Crabb (Kalamazoo, Mich.) also competed in the 3,000 meter run. Gobeyn finished with a time of 12:25.35 while Crabb set a new personal record by almost 40 seconds by clocking in at 15:06.80. Gobeyn added a fifth place finish in the 1,500 meter run by crossing the finish line in 5:35.93. St. Andrews next competes at the Seahawk Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15 at the Greene Track Complex in Wilmington, N.C. |
