Knights track & field battles at Carolinas Championship

PEMBROKE, NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College track & field teams posted top-four finishes in six of nine events entered at the 14th Annual Carolinas Championship hosted by UNC Pembroke on Saturday afternoon at the Taylor Track.

Sophomore Tessa Franz (Warren, OR) posting a PR toss for St. Andrews in the women’s javelin throw. Franz rifled a distance of 32.02-meters in the finals for a second place finish out of 16 entrants. Franz has finished second in two consecutive javelin throw competitions.

Senior Kelly Chaplin (Middlesex, VT) made her final collegiate event at SAPC a memorable one with a victory in the 3,000-meter run. Chaplin one second victory with a time of 11:01.61 was also a PR.

Sophomore Veronica Gobeyn (Mullins, SC) with the Knights personal record’s with a PR of 5:20.97 in the 1,500-meter run. Gobeyn garnered a third place finish out of 13 runners. Freshman Valerie Hamilton (Concord, NC) also competed in the 1,500 and clocked in at 7:03.61.

Freshman Leah Nicholson (Hendersonville, NC) kept the strong finishes going for the Knights with a fourth place finish out of 11 in the 800-meter run. Nicholson just missed her own PR by just over a second with a time of 2:34.94.

Freshman Perry Morris (Cedar Park, TX) ran the Knights inaugural attempt at the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a solid showing. Morris finished fourth out of 10 runners in a time of 10:28.99.

Freshman Mitch Cooper (Virginia Beach, VA) led the Knights runners with a fourth place finish out of 25 runners in the 1,500-meter run. Cooper missed his personal best time by four seconds with a time of 4:16.37. Junior Tim Bourke ( Buffalo, NY) followed in ninth place crossing the finish line in 4:24.21.

Junior David Humboldt (Canyon Country, CA) improved on his personal best distance in every competition this year with a 9.07m heave in the men’s shot put. Humboldt finished 11th out of 14 entrants.

Senior Devin Gillis (Wilmington, NC) competed in his final event at St. Andrews and posted a 13th place finish out of 20 competitors in the men’s javelin throw. Gillis had a 35.30m toss in the finals.

Sophomore Brett Alldrich (Dunellen, NJ) and junior Brandon Kosoko (Los Angeles, CA) sprinted in the 100-meter dash and posted times of 12.35 and 13.05 seconds, respectively. Alldrich’s time was a PR.

The St. Andrews track & field teams will look to use the experience of competing in four competitions in their inaugural 2006 season as a springboard to future success.
