WILMINGTON, NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College track & field teams participated in 10 events at the Cape Fear Relay Classic hosted by UNC Wilmington at the Harold Greene Track & Field Complex on Friday and Saturday.
The Knights, in only their second competitive meet, went up against mostly Division I opponents that included the host Seahawks, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Virginia Military Institute, Campbell, Ohio University, Christopher Newport, Robert Morris, and Winthrop.
Freshman Leah Nicholson (Hendersonville, NC) improved her personal-best 800-meter run time in competition by eight seconds with a seventh place finish out of 15 runners with a speed of 2:33.83.
Senior Kelly Chaplin (Middlesex, VT) led three Knights runners in the 1,500-meter run with a third place finish out of 20 runners posting a time of 5:10.92. Sophomore Veronica Gobeyn (Mullins, SC) followed in eighth with a time of 5:23.20 and freshman Valerie Hamilton (Concord, NC) crossed the finish line at 7:00.24.
The four SAPC women’s runners teamed up for their first competitive relay race. Chaplin, Nicholson, Gobeyn, and Hamilton finished the 4x1600 meter relay in 23:19.87 for a third place finish.
Sophomore Tessa Franz (Warren, OR), who qualified for the second round, finished ahead of three D-I throwers in the women’s javelin throw with a finals toss of 29.44m.
Junior Tim Bourke (Buffalo, NY) led three Knights runners and was the top Division II competitor in the 1,500-meter run with a sixth place finish at 4:13.91. Freshman Mitch Cooper (Virginia Beach, VA) finished 12th out of 32 runners with a speed of 4:17.65. In his first attempt at the 800, freshman Perry Morris (Cedar Park, TX) clocked in at 4:36.84.
Freshman Travis Cansler (Cedar Park, TX) crossed the 800-meter finish line in 14th place out of 17 runners with a time of 2:11.96.
Bourke, Cooper, Morris and Cansler teamed up for a fourth place finish out of six teams (and the top D-II finish) in the 4x1600-meter relay. In their first competitive attempt at the 1600m relay, the quartet finished with a time of 18:49.11.
Sophomore Brett Alldrich (Dunellen, NJ) and junior Brandon Kosoko (Los Angeles, CA) sprinted in the 100-meter dash and posted times of 12.77 and 12.82 seconds, respectively.
Junior David Humboldt (Canyon Country, CA) heaved a competitive personal-best throw in the men’s shot put with a finals distance of 8.71m.
Senior Devin Gillis (Wilmington, NC), who was competing in his hometown, chucked the javelin 32.73m in the finals on the men’s javelin throw.
The St. Andrews track & field teams will travel to Banner Elk, NC, for the Bobcat Invitational (hosted by Lees-McRae College) on Saturday, April 8.
