PEMBROKE, NC— Senior Kelly Chaplin (Montpelier, VT), junior Tim Bourke (Buffalo, NY) and freshman Travis Cansler (Cedar Park, TX) all won their respective events as the St. Andrews track & field team participated in its first NCAA Division II event, the Braves Track & Field Classic hosted by UNC Pembroke on Saturday.
The first year St. Andrews program only competed in 10 events but a Knights student-athlete either posted a win, place, or show in seven of those events.
Sophomore Tessa Franz (Warren, OR) just missed starting the day with a win for SAPC, finishing second in the women’s javelin throw. Franz’ final throw of 31.78m just fell short of the winning toss of 32.16m.
Chaplin easily won the 3,000-meter run by 34 seconds with a time of 11:11.32. Freshman Veronica Gobeyn (Mullins, SC) posted a fourth place finish in the same event stopping the clock at 12:12.18.
Chaplin continued her strong day with a second place finish in the deep 1,500-meter race. Chaplin’s time of 5:08.04 was less than two seconds behind the winning time. Gobeyn and freshman Leah Nicholson (Hendersonville, NC) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 5:28.58 and 5:31.21. Freshman Valerie Hamilton (Concord, NC) finished the Knights running in the 1,500 with a time of 6:55.57.
Nicholson was the only Knight to compete in the women’s 800-meter run and finished fourth with a speed of 2:41.16.
Bourke and freshman Mitch Cooper (Virginia Beach, VA) dominated the 1,500-meter run for St. Andrews. Bourke won the race with a blazing speed of 4:10.86 and Cooper followed in second at 4:12.06. Cansler also ran in the race and posted a time of 4:33.27.
Cansler took the first-place honors in the 800-meter run with a photo-finish time of 2:03.74. Bourke and Cooper placed seventh and eight, respectively, with times of 2:08.17 and 2:08.57.
Freshman Perry Morris (Cedar Park, TX) took home a runner-up finish in the 5,000-meter endurance race with a time of 17:10.25.
Junior Brandon Kosoko (Los Angeles, CA) and sophomore Brett Aldrich (Dunellen, NJ) competed in the 100-dash and sprinted to 12.38 and 12.67 second finishes.
In the men’s throwing events, senior Devin Gillis (Wilmington, NC) had a solid third-place finish in the javelin with a finals distance of 37.39m. Junior David Humboldt (Canyon Country, CA) posted a sixth-place throw in the shot put with a finals distance of 7.98m.
St. Andrews will next compete in the Cape Fear Classic (hosted by UNC Wilmington) on March 24-25.
