William Carter
Head Coach

William Carter returned to his alma mater as head men’s and women’s tennis coach in May of 2003.

Carter, who will also coach the women’s basketball program, most recently served as head coach for women’s tennis and women’s basketball at Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga. He joined the Wesleyan staff as women’s basketball coach in 1998 and added the duties of women’s tennis coach in 2001. During his tenure at Wesleyan, Carter also coached volleyball for three seasons.

Carter began his coaching career at St. Andrews, serving as head men’s golf coach for two seasons and assisting with men’s and women’s tennis as well as women’s basketball during the 1993-94 season. He then spent four years at Flora Macdonald Academy, where he assumed a variety of roles, including athletic director, interim headmaster, and coach for boys’ and girls’ basketball, tennis, and golf.

A North Carolina native, Carter is a 1988 graduate of Hoke County High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in business and economics from St. Andrews in 1992. He began his collegiate tennis career at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., and was a freshman on a team that ranked 13th nationally in the NAIA. Carter spent the remainder of his collegiate career at St. Andrews, playing No. 1 singles and doubles for three seasons. As a junior, he was seeded 12th in the NAIA Regional Tournament.

He earned a Master of Science in sports management from the United States Sports Academy in 1994 and is a certified teaching professional with the United States Professional Tennis Registry.

Carter and his wife, Leigh, reside in Laurinburg with their daughter, Claire. They are expecting their second child in September.
