St. Andrews Tennis Splits With Coker

Laurinburg, NC—After the Coker College women’s tennis team defeated Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference rival St. Andrews, 8-1, the Knights men’s team barely had enough time before the rain started on Tuesday afternoon to defeat the Cobras 5-0.
The St. Andrews men’s team was able to take five points from Coker before the rain started to give themselves two straight CVAC wins. The Knights won all three doubles matches and Daniel Reuben (Esher, Surrey, England) and Jermaine Sadambura (Harare, Zimbabwe) won their singles matches easily by the same 6-1, 6-0 score to clinch the victory for the Knights.

Knights Men’s Tennis Wins CVAC Opener over BAC, 5-4

Laurinburg, NC—Daniel Reuben (Esher, Surrey, England) and Juan Carlos Arcila (Medellin, Columbia) each went a perfect 2-0 on Sunday afternoon as St. Andrews Presbyterian College defeated Belmont Abbey, 5-4, in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men’s tennis action at the Scotland Tennis Complex.
The Knights, who have not played since February 8th, improved to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the CVAC while the Crusaders fell to 0-4 and 0-1.
Reuben and Arcila teamed up to win at No. 3 doubles along with the Knights No. 2 doubles pair of Michael Okada (Lahaina, HI) and Joseph Burnett (St. Elizabeth, Jamaica).
The Crusaders salvaged one point in doubles winning at the No. 1 spot with the team of Aaron Miller (Houston, TX) and Markus Tell (Ft. Lauderdale, FL). Tell (No. 1), Miller (No. 2), and Rodolfo Cardoso (No 3; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) each won their respective singles match for BAC.
Reuben provided the Knights with a three set victory over Andrew Gilmour (Greeley, Ontario, Canada) in No. 4 singles. After losing the first set to Matt Ottaviani (Bayville, NJ), Burnett rallied to win the final two sets and win No. 5 singles for St. Andrews. Arcila provided the final point for theKnights at No. 6 singles.
The Knights host Coker for a CVAC match-up at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. The match is a rescheduled match from last Tuesday that was postponed due to bad weather. |
No. 18 Ranked Blue Hose Cruise to 9-0 Victory over the Knights
SAPC Men’s Tennis Begins New Era

CLINTON, SC—The No.18th-ranked Presbyterian College Blue Hose defeated the visiting Knights of St. Andrews College 9-0 in men’s tennis action Sunday afternoon at the Callaway Tennis Courts.
The match was the season opener for both schools. The game marked the first regular season match for men’s tennis at St. Andrews since 1998. Men’s tennis was restarted this academic year along with the start of two new sports (women’s golf and women’s tennis).
The Blue Hose opened the match winning all three doubles matches including Graeme Lauriston and Paul Ratchford combining at No. 1 doubles to defeat freshman Miguel Quinones (Barranquilla, Columbia) and freshman Johnny Jamne (Barranquilla, Columbia) 8-1.
PC carried their momentum into singles were they swept all six matches in straight sets. Hector Rincon defeated Quinones 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles while Ratchford defeated freshman Michael Okada (Lahaina, Hawaii) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. In total, PC lost only 11 games in singles play and five in doubles play on the day.
St. Andrews returns to action on Tuesday, February 17 when they host Coker College at 3:30 pm for the team’s home opener. |
Knights Have Good Showing in Coker

HARTSVILLE, SC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College tennis teams played well in the first outing of the 2003/04 season at the Coker College Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The weekend provided a good start for first year head coach William Carter, as the Knights went up against several good Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference opponents.
With only three players, the women collected just one individual win against the tough opponents. In the A-Flight, Nicholi Marsh lost 6-0, 6-1 to Lees-McRae. April Rowe, playing in the B-Flight, lost 6-1, 6-3 to Coker. Both Marsh and Rowe lost to UNC Pembroke players in the consolation bracket. Mandy Coltrain, playing in the C-Flight lost her first match 6-1, 6-1 against Barton. Coltrain bounced back with a 6-0, 6-1 win against NC Wesleyan in the consolation bracket. Coltrain finally lost in the consolation bracket final against Lees-McRae.
Marsh and Rowe competed in the doubles for St. Andrews losing both matches 8-1 against Barton and UNC Pembroke.
The inaugural outing for the Knights men’s tennis team was very successful with six individual and two doubles matches won.
In the men’s A-Flight Miguel Quinones lost in the first round to the No. 1 seed and eventual champion from Lees-McRae. Johnny Janne also fell in the first round against Barton. Janne lost in a good three-set match against Coker to be eliminated from the consolation draw. Quinones went on to win the A-Flight consolation bracket with a three set win against Coker and a withdrawal in the finals.
Michael Okada defeated Limestone 6-3, 6-1 in the first round of the B-Flight and then lost to Barton. Daniel Reuben lost his first round match up against Coker only to go on to win the B-Flight consolation bracket. Reuben knocked off NC Wesleyan 6-0, 6-2 before winning in a long and well played 6-3, 3-6 (10-4) match against Limestone.
Jermaine Sadambura played strong in the C-Flight winning his first match against Limestone, 6-7, 6-3, 6-0. Sadambura faced Barton’s No. 1 player in the second round and lost 6-0, 6-3. Sadambura finished fourth in the C-Flight after losing in the third place consolation match against another Barton player.
Quinones and Janne teamed up to win their first round match against Coker, 9-8, in the doubles A-Flight. Barton’s No. 2 seed defeated Okada and Reuben in the first round and Quinones/Janne in the second round. Okada/Reuben went on win the consolation bracket with an 8-1 win over Coker.

Hoke County Native to Head St. Andrews Tennis

LAURINBURG, N.C – Returning to the state of North Carolina was a homecoming in more ways than one for William Carter, who was named head coach of the St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s and women’s tennis programs.
A North Carolina native, Carter is a 1988 graduate of Hoke County High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in business and economics from St. Andrews in 1992. He began his collegiate tennis career at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C., and was a freshman on a team that ranked 13th nationally in the NAIA. Carter spent the remainder of his collegiate career at St. Andrews, playing No. 1 singles and doubles for three seasons. As a junior, he was seeded 12th in the NAIA Regional Tournament.
Carter began his coaching career at St. Andrews, serving as head men’s golf coach for two years and assisting with men’s and women’s tennis as well as women’s basketball during the 1993-94 season. He then spent four years at Flora Macdonald Academy, where he assumed a variety of roles, including athletic director, interim headmaster, and coach for boys’ and girls’ basketball, tennis, and golf.
Carter, who will also coach the women's basketball program, most recently served as head coach for women’s tennis and women’s basketball at Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga. He joined the Wesleyan staff as women’s basketball coach in 1998 and added the duties of women’s tennis coach in 2001. During his tenure at Wesleyan, Carter also coached volleyball for three seasons.
He earned a Master of Science in sports management from the United States Sports Academy in 1994 and is a certified teaching professional with the United States Professional Tennis Registry.
The Knights last fielded a men’s tennis team in 1998. The St. Andrews women’s program was reinstated during the 2001-02 season, and the men will begin competition in 2003-04.
