LAURINBURG, NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s tennis team played its second straight nationally ranked team to start the 2006 season, with No. 22 Lander University winning Friday’s non-conference match 9-0 at the Scotland County Tennis Complex.

The Bearcats remained perfect on the season at 5-0 while the Knights fell to 0-2.

Lander jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles, winning all three points by matching 8-1 scores. The No. 11 nationally ranked pair of Andre Ivarsson and Joakim Karlsson defeated Andres Centeno and Ron Bryant. At No. 2 doubles, Akshay Chellappa and Stefan Tewes downed Daniel Reuben and Cory Fleck while Carlos Benatzky and T.C. Valle defeated Juan Carlos Arcila and Juan Pablo Burgos in No. 3 doubles.

Fleck provided the Knights with its closest singles contest, but still lost to Nicholas Tzekos (6-2, 6-3) in No. 5 singles. Karlsson, who is ranked No. 22 nationally, defeated Reuben (6-3, 6-0) at the top spot. No. 2 Tewes, No. 3 Henrik Erlandsson, No. 4 Ivarsson, and No. 6 Chellappa all blanked their opponents, winning each singles contest 6-0, 6-0.

The Knights visit Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference rival Mount Olive on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. while the Bearcats travel to Peach Belt Conference foe and No. 15 ranked Francis Marion on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
