LAURINBURG, NC—The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s tennis team opened up the 2006 season with a tough task against No. 23 nationally ranked Barton College. The Bulldogs prevailed with the 9-0 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference victory on Thursday at the Scotland County Tennis Complex.
The Knights No. 1 doubles pair of sophomore Andres Centeno and freshman Ron Bryant had a great run against Bulldogs Brent Ching and Brandon Simmons, who are ranked the No. 15 nationally, before falling 8-5. The Barton tandem of Nikola Andjelic and Matthew Jackman defeated Daniel Reuben and Cory Fleck, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles while Robert Jenner and Adrian Baluyot disposed of Juan Carlos Arcila and Juan Pablo Burgos, 8-0, to sweep the doubles matches.
In the singles matches, the Bulldogs won every set in route to the shutout. Barton improved to 3-1 overall (3-0 against Division II) and 1-0 in the CVAC while SAPC starts the year 0-1.
The Knights visit CVAC rival Mount Olive on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. while the Bulldogs entertain CVAC foe Limestone next Friday at 4:00 p.m.
