LAURINBURG, NC—Junior attack man Zach Mryncza (Baltimore, MD) led the No. 1 seed St. Andrews Presbyterian College men’s lacrosse team to a 21-7 victory over No. 8 seed Pfeiffer University, 21-7, with five goals and three assists on Tuesday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Deep South Conference Tournament.
The Knights (8-6 overall) will face No. 4 seed Limestone College on Friday at 5:00 p.m. in the DSC semifinals at neutral Charlotte Memorial Stadium (hosted by Queens). The Falcons conclude their season 3-11.
Mryncza assisted junior Dalen Crouse (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) on St. Andrews first goal at the 13:24 mark of the first quarter. Crouse returned the favor 22 seconds later as Mryncza tallied the first of his game-high five goals. SAPC added two more to take a 4-0 lead and never looked back.
St. Andrews out scored Pfeiffer in all four quarters – 6-2 in the first, 8-1 in the second, 4-2 in the third, and 3-2 in the fourth to take the 14-goal victory.
The Knights dominated the scorebook with a 44-29 shot advantage and a 63-49 edge in ground balls. St. Andrews freshman Ethan Young (Hilliard, OH) won a game-high 12 face offs as the two teams split the draws 16-16.
Freshman goalkeeper Nate Hull (Millersville, MD), who was just named DSC Freshman of the Year, made nine saves for his seventh victory of the year. Freshman netminder Steve Hartley (Hilliard, OH) stopped five shots in 20 minutes of relief of Hull.
Mryncza’s eight points increased his team-high totals to 35 goals, 31 assists and 66 points. Mryncza was also credited with his third game-winner of 2006.
Crouse finished with a hat trick and two assists. Juniors Tony Ferreira (Youngsville, NC) and Drew Howell (St. Albert, Alberta, Canada) each had two goals and two assists. Senior Pat Fitzgerald (Baltimore, MD) and freshman Kyle Loda (Vienna, VA) each found the back of the net twice while sophomore Dan Claffey (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) posted his first two collegiate goals along with a helper.
Senior Bryan Riddell (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada) added a goal and two assists while junior Sean Todd (Union Bridge, MD) and freshman Zachary Miller (Middletown, DE) both had a goal and an assist. Freshmen Keenan Stout (Potomac Falls, VA) and Max Kalkstein (Mystic, CT) concluded the Knights ledger with one assist apiece.
Senior Alexander Daskalow (Berlin, Germany) and sophomore Eddie Gourley (Damascus, MD) led the Falcons with two goals apiece. Senior Jeremy Fenton (Odenton, MD) had a goal and an assist while freshman Tom Weil (Ronkonkoma, NY) and senior Erik Kostek (West Seneca, NY) had the other two goals.
Sophomore goalie Chip Baucom (Chattanooga, TN) had 11 saves.
